is this Technical??
a year after cutting the tree down, makes it easier... as the stump is now clearly dead..
Use the jet wash or hose to find the main roots near the surface, blasting the soil away... the water can also soften the soil...
Using a trenching shovel (a narrow long shovel) select a large side root
dig underneath, no need to go mad, just enough to get a trolley jack under or at least some edge of the jack... I use a cheap 1 1/2 ton one..
Begin to jack up the root.... it is a sort of feel your way...
you are trying to lift the root a little to start....
basically you should hear a few creaks and see the main roots cracking the soil... the jack may start to sink into the ground.... but also the feel of the jack indicates the force needed .... too much don't force it you can burst the jack seals...
if the jack sinks too much just lower it and put a slab or concrete block under it and start again....
once the roots start to lift then stop and basically use a spade or even the hose/jetwash, wash the soil off the main roots this serves two purposes , firstly it allows you to see the roots and secondly washes the soil under the root to provide support stopping the while thing simply dropping back into the ground.
the further the roots from the stump the thinner, so you can use an axe to try to cut through them, you don't need to chop through many just one side...
support the stump.roots with blocks or bricks or lumps of the tree you cut down..
Then put more concrete blocks under the jack and start again...
the stump/roots should start to come up, you are aiming to lift one side...
every now and then, you can use a shovel or jetwash or both to remove the soil on the root/stump to expose more...
once the are are no stones or soil on the root .. you can use a chain saw if you have one or axe to cut through the thinner parts.
Once removed I actually completely jet wash the root...
if you have everything to hand I can take one out in about 1 hour, it depends if it is in the open or in a confined space... but 2h max, and I find it better than stump grinding as you actually get to pull the main side roots as well...
here,s one I did earlier...

I did have a huge engine crane years ago that was used for lorry and Bus engines, I could lift a car with it, and that could pull a root out...
what other car tools have other uses?
Off topic but need more info.... do you blast the soil away then put the trolley jack in the hole against the stump to loosen it? I have been putting that job off for about a year in my yard.
