Personally I wouldn't use the ZC75 in that gearbox - ZC75 (EP, synthetic) is for the later-type 'top change' gearboxes, like the Tipo and the late Mk1/Mk2 Uno Turbo or 1372cc versions, or for that matter, the Selespeed gearbox in my 156.

For the type with the tin cover over the selector on top and the vertical bellcrank/two gearchange rods under the floor, used on most Unos '84-'94, you need ZC90, which is non-EP and not synthetic.

If ZC90 isn't available, my next preference would be Castrol VMX (80-weight, non-EP, mineral gear oil), and if that's not available, the engine oil you mentioned will be OK, especially if you add a gearbox-oil-additive to improve the shift feel. These are sold under all sorts of names, the one I use is Australian (Nulon).

If you've already put the ZC75 in, it will probably be OK, but it isn't the same as the ZC90 that's intended for the older gearboxes. You could take the view that being a newer design of oil, it works properly in all older and newer gearboxes.

But EP oils did exist back when the Uno gearbox was designed and they deliberately weren't used in front-wheel-drive transaxles to avoid the detrimental effects on phosphorous-bronze synchroniser materials. Also, my experience with the Tipo box (which had an EP oil specified, EPYX80) is that EP oils produce a grey sludge over time which gums up the gearshift. Even in modern cars with EP oil I still change my gear oil every couple of years to prevent this. I haven't had that problem with non-EP oil.

At the end of the day, it's more important that it has oil, rather than not having oil! I expect thousands of Unos are driving around with almost no oil in the gearbox, it having leaked out through the driveshaft seals.

Right, I found my way around the Tutela/Selena website, the ZC75 has EP additives, the ZC90 doesnt, so I`m going to try semi synthetic engine oil. Heres the Tutela specs for future reference:

I`ve only managed to spend a couple of hours on it in the last few days, mainly due to rain & hail (in June!) but its coming on, the gearchange feels good, as does the clutch, so thats good.

Things left to do, refit starter, attach rear mount, put the jubilee on the inner driveshaft gaitor, put the hub & ball joint nuts on, fill with oil, then see if it works... :woot:

One more thing to mention... arent digital cameraphones handy? :D

Got it all done just now, it started up, no whiring... selected 1st... went in fine, no noise... 2nd... fine, no noise... 3rd.... nothing...

4th, 5th & reverse are all fine too, no noise, but absolutely nothing in 3rd... it selects the same as the rest, but theres no drive at all.

The gear lever seems further to the left in the car, but it wasnt removed, which is a bit odd, maybe the new mounts have moved it?

Any ideas? :(:cry::bang:

Interesting...
The fact that 1st and 5th select normally suggests, to me, that the mountings and gearchange linkages are all within tolerance.

It must be a problem with the third gear assembly itself? Some sort of toothed ring left out or reversed? I know this is maddening to have to take it all apart again, but no-one ever said gearboxes were easy... :) think of it as a Sudoku puzzle, but with a more useful outcome... Good luck!

One thing, at least you probably have the nice weather for lying under your Uno again, I'm sitting indoors with a heater.

Cheers Alex!
Unfortunately I never understood Sudoku puzzles...

I didnt leave anything out, a reversed part is a possibility, but unlikely as I dont think the gears would sit right in the casing if I`d done that, plus they wouldnt mesh properly with the other shafts, which, I think would mean most of the gears wouldnt work?

The other thing I`m thinking about is the syncro bit with the 3 springs & 3 pads, that gear clicked down over them when I reassembled the gear set, I`m wondering if I was suposed to position that differently, thing is its not covered in any of the manuals, so I dont know.

I took numerous pictures before, during & after reassembly & the gear sets look the same, as does everything else, I`ve looked at them over & over again, as well as the relevant eper pictures & I`m still at a loss... I`m pretty sure something somewhere inside isnt aligned properly, I just cant work out what. :(

I`ve driven her a few times since finishing, & other than 3rd missing & the gear positions being out , she`s driving better than before, quiet & smooth, including the syncro during quick changes.

I used 15/40 semi synthetic Castrol in the end by the way.
