I bought a dedicated kit for my van and you simply take off the connector plugs for the rear lights and plug these into the kit and reconnect the plugs on the kit to the rear lights
Only other thing to do is you need a permanent supply to the battery run down the passenger side which has a fuse on the end and is by thee battery I would think this would be for a caravan electrical supply and not for a trailer
But to answer your question the wiring runs down both sides so your better off taking your connections from each side
Don't forget your lights are cambus controlled so just taping in willy nilly will not work you need a cambus control box of tricks for your trailer wiring loom or you will get error messages on your dash all the time
The kit I got is plug and play all prewired and read to go
I got mine from eBay five years ago from a uk seller and have had no issues
