Our "own" companies forced themselves out of business by either building rubbish product or being endlessly on strike. Do you remeber "Red Robbo", the self-crowned king of LOngbridge? Or who if you bought a UK made TV in the 1970's you had to have the repair man on speed dial (ok there wasn't speed dial then, but you get the drift).
When Japanese companies came here it was a tremendously good thing because nobody else would invest here at the time, and they came here rather than continental European countries. yes of course they came here so that they were within the relatively newly-formed EC, but they brought much-needed jobs, bteer product, and a kick up the arse for the industry that was much needed, and is still welcome now. We would be much poorer without Honda Swindon, Toyota Derby, and Nissan Sunderland, and that's just the car industry.
OK. let's not talk about DeLorean in Belfast!!

Oh, so the multicultural society of the UK/Great Britain are not rioting anymore, just the English in England. And you call me one eyed.
With a bit of luck and some bloody awful waether, the novelty will have worn off and nobody will be rioting - black, white, afro asian, white, chav, Mulsim, Hindu, Christian..............

Do you have some sort deficiency I should be aware of? Not to be funny but it's pretty straight forward and easy to understand. The rioting is in England, when there's rioting in Northern Ireland do they say there's rioting in the UK? No they don't. Where are the people commiting these crimes born? I would say most black people in the UK are born here.
Glad you didn't mention English people rioting, you would set shadeyman off, no English people are rioting at all.

Personal view.
Anyone of any nationality, colour, race, religion or creed, born or living in the British Isles can say they are :-
British, English, Scotish, Irish or Welsh. Their choice.
If people prefer, they can state they are some other nationality to which they hold their allegiance, whats wrong with that?
I personally choose to say I am English, although my blood-line from my parents sides are French & Jewish.
My main point is, that not many people in the UK can claim "pure" ancestry (whatever that is) so the whole argument is clearly stupid, so get over yourselves eh?
The rioters / lawbreakers / thieving / violent / morons that have seized so much news & Forum space dont deserve it, and are spread across a broad age range & are from many different social groups.
All are as guilty as each other of crimes against the SOCIETY we all live in!

Riot police fury at soft sentences - Evening Standard
Met chiefs today accused the courts of letting down the public by handing out soft sentences to riot offenders. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stephen ...

One Hackney looter was allowed to walk free after spending two days in custody awaiting trial - and others have been let off with fines or conditional discharges.
"Some of us have been disappointed by some of the early sentences we have seen, especially those officers who have been on the front line facing the violence and disorder," said Mr Kavanagh.

Exactly, no one can claim pure ancestry really. Is it really relevant in here either? So many different types of people seem to be involved.
Soft sentences are definitely wrong. We should be building more prisons to be holding these people.
