Re: Road Angel

i will sort out that picture 2nite it still won't let me send it but it will be on 2moz 2 prove u wrong

Re: Road Angel

Dude all you can prove is that your speedo unexplainably exceeds the limit of the cars ACTUAL top speed!

I look forward to it though!

Re: Road Angel

Bloody Hell!!!!girls girls girls!!!

@ Thomas... i was the one who said my 1.8 did 135mph, that is because (going by the speedo) it did, it doesnt matter what you say otherwise... i agree that the speedo is going to be wrong! all speedos are (hence police give 5mph over to acount for that at 30mph, and 10mph at 70mph with speed cameras)!!!

For the record i have a full stainless exhaust and a sports cat, a k&N and a ecotek valve, and i aint claiming any extra hp because of them! they are all for noise apart from the ecotek valve which i believe has helped my fuel efficency!!!(regardless to what tom says it has helped)

I too have a picture, but mine only read 130mph in the photo, please send me you mobile number and i will send it to you! my mobile is 07730575753!!!! realistically i think my car has done 125mph...as 120mph is what fiat say and that is a garrenteed top speed so i am likely to get a couple of mph more than that!!!! i think you will let me have that one!

Also, the figures you read in autocar etc are exact figures and not what the speedo reads! example! i have supposidly gone 167mph in a 20vt coupe!!!thats what the speedo said! but this aint the cars top speed!!! My dads BMW 740 has 286bhp, it weights 17 000 tonnes so 286bhp dont mean alot, he took the limiter off (limited to 155) and went down an autobahn at 175mph!!!!is this true NNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! how can a bus that weighs 17 000tonnes do 175mph? it can not!

PLEASE SEND ME YOU MOBILE NUMBER SO I CAN SEND YOU MY PICTURE OF 130MPH IN A 1.8 BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Road Angel

Look....

I'm not questioning what your speedo says, but you werent doing 135mph. Even going downhill with a wind up the bum you are going to be very lucky to achieve that speed. You just cant argue that.

I'm not convinced either that police allow a 5mph tolerance at 30mph to compensate for dodgy speedo's...that sounds like poo! Am sorry to disagree but if you can send a copper round my gaff to put me in my place then thats cool!

What i am questioning is why does the speedo, for example Ant's, indicate that his car is doing 150mph+ when the car can only do 135 on a good day. Why is the speedo so far out? Why is it happening only at that speed? does it only happen with Bravo's? What is the meaning of life?

Thats ALL i'm asking and i'm not argueing anything really!

sorry to sound like a biatch. :)

p.s just for the record, those figures are from Parkers! what made you think i'm sat browsing Autocar! Dear oh dear! :)

Re: Road Angel

According to the Handbook: -

155 20V Top Speed - 213kmh (approx 136 mph)
115 16v Top Speed - 193kmh (approx 122 mph)

And for the record the HGT speedo only goes up to 150mph (unlabelled) while all other varients show up to 140mph.

The reason each speedo reads differently is because in all (but the most serious scientific measures)forms of measuring device there is an element of error through calibration. Calibration for most cars will only be concerned with ensuring that a reading is accurate to a tolerance of +/- 5% for most instances.

Therefore, based on this assumption, if your speedo is showing 100 mph it is possible that you are actually travelling at somewhere between 95 - 105 mph (both of which, I might add, are illegal in this country). If your speedo is showing 30 mph, under this assumption you would be travelling at between 28.5 - 31.5 mph (30mph +/- 5%).

This is inherent to all speedos. The urban myth is that the Police WILL NOT prosecute if you are doing 35mph in a 30 limit or up to 80 mph in a 70 limit. This is NOT TRUE but is merely an urban myth propagated by the fact that every bit of skirt with a good set of legs gets away with it while those caught by a speed camera don't. ;)

You will hear this story up and down the land as, over the years, Police HAVE (and still do) turned a blind eye to MINOR offences within 10% of the agreed limit to account for speedo innaccuracies. This is not what they HAVE to do but is what they are LIKELY to do. NO GUARANTEES!

So the moral of the story is, don't come on here bragging like some inane fool that you have blatantly endangered the lives on totally innocent people to prove your manhood (despite the significant physical evidence to the contrary) and start an arguement that no-one really gives a monkeys about unless you expect to (let's face it) cause an argument and get slated by the more considerate members of society.

Speed cameras throughout this land penalising otherwise sensible and law-abiding citizens are DIRECTLY as a result of people driving in a totally irresponsible manner in totally inappropriate situations.

Now, "Leave it Dave! He's not worth it!!" :)

Re: Road Angel

with you on the mayority of that one al!!! as al says, there is inaccuratceys, which at greater speeds mean a wide band at which the speedo is not accurate! And it isnt just bravos, look above in prvious posts where John (i believe) is selling a road angel and says his bosses volvo was doing 80 but the speedo said 90! now think as the speed increases so does the amount of error!

as for putting peoples lifes at risk!!!the only life i put at risk is my own! when i did take my car to its upper limits (the supposidly 135) it was late and the road was dead and a motorway (i am not saying what i did was right, but i am not recless and do not put any other lifes at risk other than my own!), noone on it at all and the road was straight as a die!! i do not drive like a **** (which is what is implied) at all, i have clean lisence (for a reason) and NEVER speed in 30's 40's 50's OR 60's, but i do however drive between 80-90 on the motorways or large A roads (which are basically motorways) i dont believe my a speed limit of 70 created in the dark ages should still apply to vechiles which are miles ahead in saftey terms in comparision to the flinstones rock machine of yesteryear!

And i know that it isnt set in stone that police dont prosicute at 35, but generally they turn the other way, not because they think, "oh we will let them get away with that one" but because the chances are that the driver doesnt even know they are speeding!!!

To conclude....

@thomas.speedos are wrong bcos it costs manufacturers to much to have them calibrated to be right!!! they are just GUIDES.

@Al..after implying such insults to my driving after never being in my car with me i find it hard to beleive that you are the same bloke who i was having a laugh with at the weekend! Not once did i imply that i was racing or had anyone else in the car, or that i was even on national roads! Yes i speed in 70 limits, but i bet i stick to all the other limits better then yourself!!You may find it hard to believe from my car but i aint no midnight racer! and its a generalisation that i HATE, i have spent loads of money (loads to me, i am a student and live on part time jobs!) on my car, because i think it looks better because of it(personal oppinion) an enjoy owning my car more because of it!!

@Ant..accept that your speedo is wrong, and accept that the MR2's is wrong...because it is!

Re: Road Angel

@Paul R.

Whooaa leslie! This was a togue in cheek response to what was becoming a quite emotive post. It was in no way a personal attack on any individual more a case of if you are breaking the law why come on here and brag about it? As you can see by reading through the thread you stated your top speed in a matter of fact manner not, "Hey, I was racing around like a lunatic" as is the case with the original poster.

I consider myself to be one of the more liberal minded individuals on this forum and try to stick to fact not fiction.

If any offense was caused to you please accept my ascertion that it was not intended.

As for speed limits from the dark ages, my understanding is they were developed in part to reduce fuel comsumption in the 70s during the oil crisis and in part to stop motor manufacturers do top speed runs down the newly laid M1 motorway. Definitely out of date in terms of modern cars but remember, there are still some very old cars out there and the rules have to apply to everyone, not just the most capable.

I indeed also drive over the speed limits in certain circumstance as I'm sure smee and Dan can confirm but not excessively or in areas where it could cause harm to anyone other than myself (and only when I'm in the car on my own).

I think we are on a similar wavelength here so please read my post again without the emotion and I think you'll see the message I was trying to convey. :)

speedo

right this is the picture of my speedo OK!!!! and what does it say on the speedo if the top speed on a hgt is 160???

speedo.jpg
[/IMG]

Re: speedo

Well, we have already established that the top mark on the HGT is 150 so it is displaying approx 144 mph. Just over the +/- 5% discussed earlier.

Re: speedo

and i said earlier i havn't got the one where i went off the clock!!!
but people where saying 137 was the top speed?

Re: speedo

for any police who is looking at this post i was on a germany motor way ;)

Re: speedo

Not wanting to labour the point but 136/7 is the published top speed for the 155 HGT. So let's take 137 and apply the assumed rule that the speedo can be out by +/- 5%.

Therefore, the likely displayed reading on a 155HGT with a calibrated tolerance of +/- 5% would be: -

137*1.05 = 143.9 mph maximum;
137*0.95 = 130.2 mph minimum.

Therefore, your speed is around the mark for a standard calibration of the speedo.

Shal we put this to bed now as we really are going round in circles because there are 2 or more discussions going on. :)

Re: speedo

and as you get up to 90mph+ the calibration could easily be much more than 5% out, why would manufacturers even care to calibrate a speedo anywhere near accurate at 110/120/130/140 mph in a small family hatch that should never be driven at it's maximum speed ?!?!

Re: speedo

thats nice!! i never said i was doin that speed but it was tell me that i was the needle has gone as far as it can go round the clock and im not sayin its accurate ethier!!
next time il post my speedo is shown me 150mph but im not actually going that fast beacuse if u take the 5-/+ % of the blah blah

back to the left

I hope that wasn't you taking that pic! ;)

Re: back to the left

@ Al...To be honest i aint going to bother reading your post again...I have had some sleep now (look at the time i posted my reply) and no that after seeing you on saturday that my post jumped the gun! :) Please accept my apoligies as i was the one who went off on one! :( ! Ppl normally argue went they have the same oppinions or totally different, i think we have very simuliar oppinions so i am going to just forget everything and leave it here :)

@ Daz...Yes he took the picture!

@ everyone my 1.8s speedo can read 135mph....but i do not claim that to be the top speed, as its a 1.8 and not anything special...

Paul R

This could be quite a good feature on top gear!!!get all the blokes who claim stupid top speeds and prove them wrong on the track, i would not be there as i do not claim 135mph as my top speed!!!

Re: back to the left

All this thread has tought me, is that:

1. The speedo in a fiat bravo is now the only measuring instrument that i know of, that is designed not to measure something accurately.

2. I can be a proper bitch sometimes :)

Re: back to the left

Ahhhhh, it's all turned out nice again hasn't it. ;)

Seriously though, Paul; cheers mate. :)
