Tips for using the touch up pens from fiat

I had someone go into my front bumper the other day, there is about a 1cm chip in the paint and its gone down to the plastic (you can see black)
I was going to get it resprayed properly at a bodyshop but i just found out that my cambelt needed doing so thats out of the question for the moment.

Long story short, ive got a touch up pen from fiat, and was wondering if anyone has any tips for using it (never done it before and dont want to mess my car up lol)

Directions For Touch Up Paint Pens​

Surface Preparation

Thoroughly clean area to be repaired with dish soap (Joy, Dawn etc.) and water. Then dry completely. The use of prep solvent and a clean lint free towel assures the best clean surface free of wax, grease, and other oil based surface contaminates. For better results do not apply in direct sunlight

Loading The Tip With Paint

Shake the paint pen tightly capped until the ball rattles freely. Remove the cap and press the spring loaded tip of the paint pen on a flat surface until the paint flows through. You may need to press the tip in a few times for some colors. Paint should be tested on a test surface before using on your vehicle. This process may need to be repeated in between coats.

Primer

Apply 2-3 coats touch up primer over bare metal or plastic 10-15 minutes in between coats.

Paint Touch Up Application

Thoroughly shake the base coat color before applying. Apply as many coats necessary to cover the area leaving 10-15 minutes minimum between light coats. Do not wet sand or use prep solvent in between coats of paint or clearcoat.

Please allow 1 hour to overnight after base coat color has been applied to apply clearcoat. Apply 2-3 coats of clearcoat using a light dabbing motion waiting 15-20 minutes in between coats. Be gentle with the tip because you do not want to disturb the undercoats.

Clear coat should be dry to the touch in 1-2 hours, but will completely dry overnight. Clearcoat can be compounded after fully dry to bring optimum shine. Clearcoat can also be wet sanded lightly with 1500 and than polished to remove dirt. Not exactly the easiest task for a beginner to remove wet sand scratches by hand compounding. Do not wax the fresh paint for one month.

hmmm i dont really have a choice at the moment, as long as it looks better then the black that is showing at the moment it should be fine, ill get it sprayed when ive got the cash

sometimes the brush is too big a pin or scribe is often better so too is an Airfix type air brush

I got a perfect match from Halfrauds.

Had one or two wee nicks here and there and its done a pretty decent job.

paints4u do very good kits, a little more than the Fiat ones but I have found the colour match to be better.

Don't try to use it outside now, it's just to cold and damp....!!
Use it indoors, where it's dry and warm, or wait until (late) spring.

I'm going to do it in my garage, and if its not great ill take it to a bodyshop after xmas and get it done properly

Cheers, but too late now... i've already got the pen. I thought that it would have been best from fiat but obviously not...

Overhere in Holland there's a new franchise chain called "Chips Away Car Care Center", and they are specialized in small damages like on your car.
They repair/respray with a special technique, without having to respray complete panels etc. for just about half the normal price!
Maybe there's something like that in England as well..??
