how often should the belt be changed? is the job strait forward or is it a right pig?:bang: are any special tools needed? just gonna do service soon . it is the 1.8 petrol thanx !;)

As I recall from previous posts, it's no more difficult than other engines, but having the correct cam locking tools is essential. There have been quite a few cases of people on here getting their belt changed (even by garages, never mind DIY) and suffering engine problems thereafter, due to incorrect timing.

if it needs doing, get it done asap is the main poin to stress....i belive its 35k or 5 years which ever comes first?

i decided not to attempt it my self, mainly because there was too much risk in me messing it up, and i know a good garage, with warrantied work. also the cam lockign tools can be quite pricey last time i looked....i think i paid £350 for timing belt, tentioners, pumps, variator and aux belt....

Sealey Tools locking kit for the 1.8 is around £135.00
includes the cam locks and crank lock plus a tensioner
tool. The both cams and crank need locking to tension
the belt. Please note the cams wheels should be loose when
the belt is tensioned and then locked into position after
tensioning.

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE EXHAUST CAM IS HELD
IN POSITION WHEN TIGHTENING WITH A TWO PRONGED
TOOL AS INCORRECT USE OF A PRI BAR CAN DAMAGE
THE SENSOR RING AND CRACK THE CAM SENSOR.
