My daughter's 1.2 Lounge has gone into 'limp' mode. OBDII has given me an error code of P1220 - TPS Potentiometer fault.


It would appear to make sense to replace the TPS first before I delve deeper. My question is how difficult is it to replace? I understand that it is attached to the accelerator pedal and is only secured by two hex screws with the electrical connection above. My problem is I can't get in there to see what needs to be removed from, what appears to be, a 'cage'.


Has anyone else changed the TPS on a 500 and, if so, any chance of a piccie or two or some advice ref how to get to it?

Evening all!

My wife has had this issue today with her 13 plate 1.2 Colour Therapy.

She was driving along when the car went into limp mode, but thankfully was in a village on a main road so easy to pull in.

I wasn't there at the time, but the code returned was "P1220 - throttle sensor malfunction". Apparently the AA chap then cleaned it out a bit, popped it back in, reset the codes and the car was able to be driven back home.

My wife was just about to go out again and the MIL light came back on again; she was barely able to get it off the drive, so quickly reversed back home!:)

The car is due to be booked in to our local garage tomorrow morning, but was wondering if there are any suggestions in the meantime, if only to make it more driveable to get it to the garage (which is about half a mile away)? I have a feeling there was a thread somewhere (possibly on the GP section) where Andy Monty replied about resetting the battery and doing a throttle relearn?

Other than that, any other suggestions?

Just been googling this again and it seems its a difficult part to source other than from Fiat dealer.

I did find one place but it wouldn't ship until Monday. I'm going to attempt to clean it. I have some MAF sensor cleaner from my Ford Cmax so I'm wondering if that might do the job. It's intermittenent so could just be crud in the system. Bearing in mind this car was standing for about 8 months in a muddy alley, who knows.

Shame I've wasted my money ordering a new battery and coil pack, ho hum.
 
So this is the throttle body. I unplugged it, gave it a bit of a squirt with compressed air. Sprayed some MAF cleaner into the throttle body, started it up, gave it a bit of revs and the fault came back.

So, I'm going to need to get a new sensor then. Does anyone know, do I have to remove the whole throttle body to replace the sensor. I can't see any screws to remove it. Haynes manual doesn't say!

Have you checked eLearn? Diagrams aren't always the best but it might give you some idea.

I haven't actually I will look. I've bought a 2013 complete throttle body from eBay for £25 assuming I have to take the whole thing out to change the sensor I might just change the whole thing. Have since found out that you can use brake cleaner to clean out the intake.
 
I've now taken the whole throttle body off as I tried cleaning it and it made no difference. The TPS I've seen in pictures doesn't actually look anything like what I'm looking at.

This is the part I've taken off of the side of the throttle body which has a circuit board in it. Is this the sensor?

I believe that this isn't anything to do with the sensor, I now think that the sensor is actually screwed onto the pedal so I've probably taken this all off for nothing and bought a second hand one for nothing. Oh well, we live and learn.

In a typical fly by wire system there is normally potentiometers on both ends to determine pedal position and throttle position respectively.
 
In the pic you can see the sweep area that's on the reverse of the board that's the potentiometer I would guess the actuator is the other side of the assembly?
You also have is it, throttle 'pedal ' position sensor or throttle valve/body/flap position sensor?

Yes, the other will be on or near the pedal.
