Dreaded gearbox oil seal has popped. Three weeks ago the clutch started juddering. Then a week later 1st gear started grumbling and last week 2nd piped up and now 3rd is in the background. If in the U.K. I could get a recon for £435 delivered, a clutch kit for £80 and then four hours Labour at an Indy. Unfortunately I’m in France where literally anything motoring related is up to twice the price. My quote for the exchange recon gearbox is £1000. The clutch is usually £200 but I guess as I’m taking the box they’ve given me a 50% discount so £100. I have a good local British mechanic who is going to charge me £340 Labour all in. It’s a 78k mile 2012 car worth around £2800. It had a new cam belt and w/pump 14k mikes ago too £650. I have no choice but to do it. Gutted.

Would it be cheaper to transport it to blighty for the work
I had considered it but it’s a 1300 mile round trip to the garage I trust near my mothers house plus the eurotunnel both directions. The cost of which would outweigh any saving on having it done in the U.K. Not to mention I don’t know if I could trust a 650 mile trip n it now. I’m basically looking at £500 more here than there and it just burns me because I cannot see any reason for it other than profiteering. France is a bit of a racket overall sadly. All services are much more expensive over here. I’ve just had to give a plumber £600 for a days Labour at my house.
