With the current issues facing Nintendo's latest offering, the 3DS, how many of you are that fussed about 3D?

Cinema, home viewing, these new-fangled handhelds or the good old red/green glasses and a copy of Jaws 3D, whatever the option, do you's want it/like it/think there's a need for it?

Personally, for the most part I view it as a gimmick. Many movies add it on in post production and it gets tagged on almost with the result being it doesn't quite work. Especially with those horrendous Buddy Holly style glasses.

I think the only real future it has is in gaming and perhaps sport. Certain environments like IMAX are great for the experience, but I think it needs to be a 3D film from the start like Avatar for it to really work.

So, what's everyone's views...?

I voted with the glasses.

The only time I really notice the benefit is at the cinema, maybe it'd be different if I had contacts again but I'm just not sure.

My mate has a nice 3D set up at his house, but I really struggle to find any sort of benefit with it. Plus he has the telly, the surround sound to match...but only one pair of those special batterty powered glasses to enjoy his 3D with!

Avatar, at the cinema, was decent in 3D though.

meh, apparently folk with the 3ds are feeling ill through using it after a couple of hour, according to the radio!!!

I like my current setup at the moment so will not be updating to a 3d tv anytime soon, although a bose wireless surround system and a 52" HDTV from my 37" would defo be a priority!! ;)

atm, doesnt bother me at all, having said that im sure if i experienced it more i'd prefer it but until technology properly catches up to provide true 3d without the drawbacks, its not really a practical thing, but good for events like cinemas etc, just not in your home for now

GT5 is available in 3D apparently, which interests me. Though given I'm viewing it on a 28" standard def Panasonic, anything would probably be an improvement lol

I honestly think gaming and sports are the two main segments that could really be good though as said, if a movie's done well it works well. Clash of the Titans was one for example I felt it'd just been tagged on as a gimmick and just didn't work all that well at all.

I remember a few years back another Nintendo console that made the users feel sick after a short time of using it. Had about 20 games released for it and the actual console is now almost totally forgotten. Behold, the Virtua Boy...

and an image from one of the nausea inducing games...

think technology's improved since then but even still, you'd think they'd focus group test it first before releasing it with kind of a major flaw.

awesome :D cheers :)

btw, slightly related topic, i remember i was going to give you a shot of heavy rain for the ps3, still have it if you want :D

ah completly forgot about it :D yeah can grab it some time and turn the ps3 on for the first time in maybe oh i dunno 3 months :D

whie you reminded me about 3d i just had a quick look to see when the 3d adapter is in stock as its a huge global demand at the moment for it and is a months wait for it to get the item and website says it is getting 21 items of it in 3-4 days :D heres hoping it comes this time round :D

I actually love 3D on TV's... its absolutely amazing, played Motorstorm in 3d and it was unreal then a documentary too. But i don't like it in cinemas, its never impressed me that much. So i'd actually say the opposite its good at home but not in the cinema yet.

its because the cinemas are still using the old amercian formats in the 24fps whih is to slow for the screens and produce judder on the projected image but aparently james cameron and his quest to make 3d huge has created his new films using the proper 60hz formats needed to produce a smooth slowing frame rate which will stop people becoming sick in the cinemas which i hope works as well as he promises :D

and becuase TVs are using the correct 120hz (60hz per eye) then all should be fine but thats the low ends screens its even better if you can get hold of a good high Hz screen plasmas are best as you get the ones up to 600hz which is around the best for doing it although the colors aint as good as the lcd but is half the price so its al down to choice really :D

Hi.
As an EX television engineer, I would not even entertain one of these sets in a gift. We buy all this stuff online, Tesco's or other places that offer no service. Would you buy a new car from a dealer with no back up? The majority of LCD and Plasmas are landing up in the dump, why? In a word because for a long time from the mid 90's onward less people would pay a reasonable charge for a repair as the stuff was too cheap. So there are no engineers to fix them, no training etc.
No I will keep my CRT set, fix it myself and keep away from poor quality modern rubbish.
