hi folks
need a newer car and seen an multipla eleganza m-jet 1910 09 reg at the auction
i'll only bid for it if it comes in cheap enough,
as you know not much you can check at the auction, so do these normally run ok
is there anything to look/listen for when I look over the car
thanks

Buying at auction has its own risks as its very much not hands on.

Can you view the service history ? What's the mileage ?

If I was buying at auction, I would look at what I could see :

Tyres and alloy wheels condition
Brake disc condition.
Brake Pad condition.
When its started up, ask driver to rev it a bit and look for white or blue smoke.
Any warning lights on the dashboard after starting up.
Interior condition.
Ask driver to test leccy windows / folding mirrors and sunroofs if fitted
See if the steering wheel is centred and check from wheel tracking visually.
Any running engine noises.
Ask driver to pop the bonnet open, check dip stick and levels of the brake fluid, coolant and power steering fluid, dirty or clean engine bay.
Pollen filter cover, has it been ever removed, mine was never opened till I bought mine.
Check condition underneath of the DPF as this plate will deffo have one.
Look underneath at rear and check if spare wheel there, many are robbed in auction houses.

Sure another forum user will chip in with more things to check.

Interesting to see what it sells for, as Multipla values being on the up lately.

Also guide auction prices. October 2013 CAP Values.

@40,000 miles / 4 Years Old :

Retail : £5795.00
Auction Clean : £4325.00
Auction Average : £3985.00
Auction Poor : £3115.00

@80,000 miles / 4 Years Old :

Retail : £5000.00
Auction Clean : £3155.00
Auction Average : £2310.00
Auction Poor : £2080.00

Hope above helps.

That shows how few late-plate Multis are around to base the values on - those guide prices are all over the place. A difference of about £800 on retail but for 'auction average' it's more than double that.
The prices being asked for on Autotrader are similarly random.

thanks for comments
not a great deal I can check at the auction its the any major problems that i'm concern with,

its got 45k no clock, don't know how much these go for at my local auction, if it goes into 4k, i'll wait for a ford c-max to come along

FFF didn't mention the clutch. To me this is main item on a Mutlipla that combines fragility with expensive repair/replacement. The rear subframe is perhaps the only other item that the same can be said of - check it for rust and the condition of the four bushes it mounts on (they're easy enough to see without having to climb right under the car).

Check that the clutch bites at least 1.5 - 2" from the floor. If it starts to bite less than an inch up from the carpet, it'll be due for replacement soon. Expect a bill of around £500-800 if you get a garage to do it.

Very unlikely you get to play with clutch travel and rely on the drivers comments, who is no mechanic, unless they are in disguise, hence I did not mention it. Sub £500 for clutch and DMF change where I am. I assume prices vary around the UK for the same task.

Very true, but this is how trade values work, some cars are worth double when you retail, just shows the margins and profits the used car dealer is making, you think you get a bargain, but the saleman still has his **** covered by his boss.

Multipla's I am told are selling on condition, history and mileage, the plate is really irrelevant.

this 09 reg eleganza 1.9 multijet diesel
looked in good condition, 45K on clock
mot only few days, taxed til march
it went for
£3300 + costs so around £3500

too much for me, as I was not really after a multipla,
if it had been nearer the 3k mark I would have tried a bid or 2

Still a tasty profit for the trader who sells it on.. Look out for it on Ebay, Pistonheads, autotrader if its advertised
