I am fortunately now back on the road and with a new metal housing.
Has anyone else had this issue?

Yes, of coursethe thermostat housing on my 500 failed causing me to break down on the motorway! I had no warning signs

Good to know they realised and changed it on the later models! I have a late-2016Yes, of course
I carry the spare all-metal one with me in with the spare wheel ,
now I have discovered my 2018 model shouldn't have the same design![]()
Keep checking the coolant level, my worry is a overheated cylinder head, the achilles heal of this engine.break down on the motorway! I had no warning signs and always checked my coolant levels.
I stopped within 30 seconds of the warning light and “temperature high check fluid” warning. Temperature gauge went up as I was pulling into the roadworks on the motorway. Fortunately the roadworks were there as it was one of the silly smart motorways!Keep checking the coolant level, my worry is an overheated cylinder head, the achilles heal of this engine.
Thats exactly what it should do. Cooling teh rad allows some circulation even after its switched off. I dont see it much. The Golf used to do it all the time.Since having the new metal thermostat housing fitted and new coolant there has been a couple of occasions when I park, turn off the engine, and the cooling fan runs for about 10 seconds. Anyone else had this issue?
Heading back to the garage now as they are concerned.
Thank you. There was an air lock in the system apparently! Though the fan is still coming on after a short drive and after I have parked. Garage now concerned it could be a head gasket issue. Argh.Thats exactly what it should do. Cooling teh rad allows some circulation even after its switched off. I dont see it much. The Golf used to do it all the time.
I doubt it from what you said. I find these things DO NOT self bleed. Im afraid I actually blow into the radiator with the bleed valve open and it works. It took a month for ours to settle after changing a hose. Gurgling and water level dropping. Dont rush into that job until you are sure.Thank you. There was an air lock in the system apparently! Cooling fan running after a short run indicates the engine was HOT, this is a concern on this type of engine.Thank you. There was an air lock in the system apparently! Thanks. Wondering if the fluids need to settle. Drove 50 miles to and from the coast yesterday with no issues and cooling fan didn’t come on. Drove 20 mins from the shops this morning and the fan comes on!Cooling fan running after a short run indicates the engine was HOT, this is a concern on this type of engine.
Took about a week for the level to stabilise when I did our radiator
No gurgling and having checked the coolant it has stayed at max for the past couple of weeks.Yep keep an eye every day for a week on the level top up as required, listen at start up for any gurgling?
If its not been done for some time( 2-3 years ) have the ac recharged and replace the cabin filter, with hopefully summer coming a worthwhile investment, oh and never turn it off !!
Having been lucky enough to drive a car with AC since the early 80's, if you want the system to last as long as it can, like a car, you need to use it or loose it, those people who say I only use it when it's really hot tend to find it doesn't work at all, climate control cars rely on it always available, in now 40 years the only ever failure was a ac pump in the 90's so always leave it on, that's what the temperature knob is for, if it's too cold turn it up not the ac off, keep the system full of gas and it should last 20 years in constant use, I admit there is a trade off in economy but in my personal opinion its more than worth it? Stuck on a blistering motorway in 89 when everyone was melting in a rage there were we cool and calm.No gurgling and having checked the coolant it has stayed at max for the past couple of weeks.
A/C done in 2022 so due this year. Never turning it off is interesting! Why is that?
Cooling fan coming on after the odd journey is strange. Wonder if there is still an air lock? Garage looking at it again later this week.
Silly how they fit a small plastic part within the engine bay. Mine broke clean off on the motorway. Not good!I had this yesterday on my boys car. Crappy plastic pipe snapped, off the thermostat housing losing most of the coolant. I'm not sure how long he drove it like this as he said he saw a message on the dashboard but it went away.
Anyway I fitted a new GSF thermostat housing and coolent the leak has stopped.
