A litle misleading a title I think, but.. it's about that little space under the fascia when you put in an aftermarket head unit.

I've come up witha use. but i think i'm going to struggle, justwondering if there's any budding electronics techs in here that might be able to give me some help (GCSE/A-Level electronics only for me, so I might be out of my depth a little)

Here's the crack:
I have a snooper, it's the S5-R, I quite like it, but I want to demolish it.
I want to put the controls for it, and that LED display in that annoying "no good for anything but chewing gum" gap under my head unit.
This I can do with a bit of work, the difficulty is then wiring the rest of it to various locations in the engine bay/dash board...

anyone done this? or something similar, anything I should watch out for?
Or in order to save me the hasssle, anyone figured out a better way to use this space up :)

Re: That little piece of dashboard..

While your considering the useless hole* under the radio, how about the as-useless hole to the left the the steering wheel (as shown the the pic below):

I appreciate the richer among us have a vehicle that has something in the steering wheel-height hole as standard, but, alas, I'm just a poor lad.

Santa is bringing me the Blue-Parrot BlueTooth thingy for Christmas - hopefully that, or at least part of that, can fit somewhere in or near one of these 'fantastic bits of available storage'.

* useless hole is defined as "unable to keep hold of pens while vehicle is in motion / unable to store 'extra mints' / useful, in general, as a chocolate teapot"

I concur - what the hell is this slot for...?!?

Silly me tried to use it for coinage once (I know there's a nifty coin holder beside the handbrake, but I'm new to this!!!) - as soon as I moved the car, the money went south!!! (I know there's a €2 coin enjoying its new-found freedon somewhere on my floor...!!!)

I have noticed that there're two slits or ridges on the inside top of the useless hole - I wonder if these lend any clue to it's actual function...!?!

I came across this yesterday and I thought it looked really smart, it's what I would do if I didn't have the 7 inch screen.

Yea that's pretty slick. I'm not sure I'd bother getting dials for mine.. mostly cos it's not got rally car pull or anything. but it would be an option if i get it turbo'd

Having spoken to the lovely folks at snooper.. they said... yea,... don't.

so back to the drawing board.

So have we never found out what the hole is for? My local garage said it was for coins, obvisouly he's never put coins in there and driving anywhere.

My theory is, its for a push start ignition.

Engine start button for cars on the continent.

Re: That little piece of dashboard..

i found this out a few weeks ago, its for a push button start for some forign modles, and no we cant get one after market fitted :(

Having just bought an aftermarket cd player, the remote fits nicely in there; as does my phone every now and then...

Think bozzy has the best idea for the space under the head unit - ipod holder, does look very smart (y)

As for the one to the left of steering wheel - completely useless, absolutly nothing fits/sits in there.

Yeah absolutely pointless cubby hole!!!! i've just ordered the start switch that should fit there on models with the 'EASY GO' keyless entry system.. might see if i can install it somehow??? have to wait till it arrives.

Tried that myself; considered it to be pointless. The switch can't handle any current as it's just a pulse sender. You'd have to have the key in the ignition to allow the immobiliser to turn off. Just considered its far simpler to keep turning the key than hack wires to have a button!

go fir it if you want, but i would listen to ye old wise one (rrope) not much point in it really if the key has to be used anyway, defeats the point in having push button start
