Driving home tonight I come of a roundabout, hit the go pedal and while crossing 4000rpm the engine died!!! Rolled it to a stop and tried to start it, it was turning over but it just wasn't starting. Called the RAC and 5 minutes (yes 5!!) a van shows up and manages to jump start it!!

Thought I was going mad as it was turning over earlier. Anyway, the battery is getting changed, the alternator is fine but he couldn't put a finger on the fault...could be anything it turns out!!

Feck!!

yeah mate as said give the negative a good cleaning on the ends as the brava did that for me aswell from time to time :)

grr told ya before if your in my neck o the woods can get you the shizzle you need :) just got my mate a battery for his a4 tdi for 20 bucks and still kept the 3 year gaurantee on it :D

****, I forgot about that...just bought one from Hellfrauds, can I take it back if it ain't used??

Can you price me a battery for me Darren, I'd come get it this weekend if need be???

isn't 4000rpm the rev limit :p

Diesels need very little battery power to run so i am not sure if that would have caused that. You say the engine was turning but the wasn't catching? I would say fuel pump, relay or earth point.

Mine revs round to just over 5000 - must be that extra cylinder :D

Hamish has also suggested to EGR so I'll be doing some investigative work over the next few days :?

EGR already mentioned to Matt as has the dreaded MAF - but I wonder..... maybe the crank sensor is our spy.... :?

Wouldn't explain it cutting out completely (even in an Italian car :! :) - mind you, it might.
But if the crank sensor had an intermitent fault (rather than being completely shagged) it would turn over and not start.... then miracle of miracles it would suddenly start when it's all 'working'.

Now I've heard of this problem on other JTD engines...... Matt, over to you m8 ;)
