Am I right in thinking the 1.3 Multijet engine has a chain driven camshaft?

Does the 1.9, or is the 1.9 a belt driven camshaft?

If so, at what mileage does the cambelt need changing?

Any info gratefully received!

I'm not sure about the 1.3 but our 1.9 (09) is belt driven. Memory serves me right its changed at 60000 or five years which ever comes first.

Bugger! So if I buy a '56' plate 1.9 Multijet I'm going to have to have the cambelt done straight away... :bang:

600 c.c.

I would recommend every 4 years for timing belt and especially the water pump.

Just because the 1.3 (and other cars) has a timing chain you wont get problems because you will. Micra chains stretching, corsas, 1.3mj tensioners etc

Best to have it inspected, much like you would in a service. If it's ok and within the time/mileage then it can wait.

If it is overdue in terms of time/mileage or it looks knackered then get it done.

I'm having a DEKRA inspection done on the car prior to purchase...

I'll probably have it serviced and the belt & pullies replaced anyway.

It's not always the belt though, the 1.9 water pump is like chocolate and collapses taking the belt and valves with it.

Agree, and what idiot decided to put yet another component likely to fail (water pump bearing) in the camshaft/belt timing train. That idiot was an industrial accountant focusing solely on production cost and ignoring long customer satifaction and support.
