Hello Pete - many thanks for the reply. I am in South Africa (long way from you) but have already replaced the sender unit which did not change anything. A previous owner had thought that the actual water temp was too high, so de-activated the thermostat, and I imported a new one - now of course the temp goes up nice and quickly, but looks worryingly high on the gauge itself. As i said however, the engine temp is fine, so it is simply an annoyance! (But one I would like to sort out!). Incidentally, being summer here, it is too hot to go topless except at night!
