OK, trying to isolate just part of my ongoing problems (see my other thread), can someone please tell me whether a TD engine (100 or 125) runs better if a defective MAF is disconnected?

I know on my son's Bravo JTD that when the MAF was not working, the car felt flat & wouldn't rev past 3000. When I disconnected the MAF it worked really well & a new MAF worked equally well.
So, on a JTD if it runs better with the MAF disconnected, then the MAF is clearly at fault.
Does the same thing happen with the TD? The MAF in mine was broken (as in no hot film present!) when I got it, but a new Ebay MAF seems to make no difference, connected or not

it should be better if the MAF is broken or dirty
it should be the same (other that the erratic idle) if the MAF not the problem.

in this case we know the MAf wasbroken before replacement, but we dont know if that was the only fault. it now appears that it wasnt the ony fault, but alternatively the ebay MAF may not suit the car or it may be faulty. can you borrow a known good MAF from anyone or buy one from a scrapyard?

also clean the EGR valve and its pipework, and consider trying a scrapyard EGR valve.

??

How an engine runs with a busted / disconnected MAF is highly dependent on the strategy of the ECU.. in general phase 1 JTD bravo's will slightly overfuel if the MAF is disconnected.. thus run better and won't throw a management light, but phase 2 JTD's will lack power and throw the light. there were a few different ECU's / software versions used in JTD's.
Also on ebay MAF's.. why do people bother . genuine ones are not actually that expensive now.. and bosch agents can give a discount for taking the old one. The far east might make good plastic.. but can't make them actually work..

Hello!

I also have problem whit 2.4 td 1997. there is no boost and it is the same when MAF is disconected only diffrence is that, there is a lot of black smoke from exhaust. I also can not hear no sound from turbo.
I try to disconnect turbo pipe on the top that go to inlet and start the car. Reving in neutral and there is air blowing from turbo house on the top of the engine so I think turbo is working or I am wrong.
Westgate is not blocked! What next I can check.
Is there any chance that MAF is broken even so there is no difference when it is unpluged.

Thanks for any help :bang:
