Hi I have been given a cinquecento sx 1995. it is beginning to sound like a tamk, is this likely to be the tappets. please help.[?]

Hi, welcome to the forum.

Yep. most likely will be the tappets, have a listen to see if the sound's coming from the top of the engine. There are a couple of methods that can be used to try to fix this - I'll have a root through and try to find the posts (unless someone else wants to jump in...:))

Splash!!

My world famous remedy is to warm up the car, switch off, remove oil and filter, fit new filter and fill sump with Derv. Run engine at a fast idle for about 15 mins, switch off, remove derv and filter. Fit new filter and fill with good quality oil of the correct grade.

Cheers and welcome

This might sound stupid but forgive me, whats derv? [)]
Will try the the tip in the summer as my tappets are loud when i first start the engine, but silent after a few seconds.

Derv = Diesel!

GrpN Catback Exhaust system on...rattles like f**k, but very nice!!!

Do you know how this works then? I dont understand how putting diesel in the sump can stop tappets making the noise? How come oil doesnt do it? sorry for all the questions.

Chris

The tappets that are making the noise are jammed shut, the oil is unable to get into them, either cos they themselves are gummed up, or the oil feed to them is blocked. Derv, which is just 'oil lite' with detergents maintains the lubrication system but cleans out any oil residues. It is not completely foolproof. If the engine is completely gummed up, then nothing will really shift it short of taking it to bits, but for the sake of a few quid its worth a try.
Make sure you don't rev the engine when using the Derv, it will break up and you will loose the oil film from your shell bearings (this is not good) a fast idle is all it needs.

Hope this clears some of the mist

I know from experience on my 899cc Cinq, the oil breather pipe has a clip to hold it. But those idiots at Fiat that designed it made the clip too small and after a few ten-thousand miles, the breather pipe melts together. My car's tappets were awful and I blame it on that simple fault. It goes totally un-noticed until all of a sudden - your tappets sound like a tractor! Check your breather pipe. I had to pay about £50 from Fiat for a new one[:(!]

Ello people,

Me tappets be playing up somewhat, and i've done an oil flush and put some lovely new 10w40 in, but tappets be still rattling away. Where abouts is this oil breather pipe/what does it look like? Do u just release the clip to restore oil flow?

Cheers

taking the tappets out and soaking them in parafin, deisel or white spirit should unblock them basically something that will evaporate after use and penetrates.
Remember to fill them with oil before you put them back in, this is what i did and cannot believe the difference it made. A few of my tappets were just jammed shut and the oil hole is very very small and if the car has not had its oil changed regularly it turns to sludge.

if the tappets are well gummed up it will be constant but if they are on the way it will usually just be when you start the car then it will quiet down. But the length of time to take to quiet will get longer and eventually constant. Mines are fine now but if left for a couple of days makes a noise on start up untill the oil gets into them.

Rogue tappet or is it the cam

I am going to give Rallycinq's deisel tappet cure a go this weekend. The tappet noise has been getting progressively worse over the last couple of months on my daughter's 903 Cinq. It has not happened all of a sudden. I took off the rocker cover last weekend to have a look.
However, I am wondering if it's not so much the clogged up oilway but more the lobe on the camshaft that is the problem as No 8 tappet is very slack. Not enough to come adrift from the pushrod but not by a lot. The tappets are the later type with no adjustment. The other 7 tappets are a nice snug fit.
I managed to get the small circlip off number 8 and the round 'disk' type shim.. There was oil in the tappet so I am wondering if the problem is elsewhere.
Has anyone else had such a rogue tappet and what was the cause?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
