Replacement dipstick arrived today. The old one came apart - warning against screwing it in too tightly and wearing the plastic 'ratchet' out:

Mixed feelings about the order - it took 16 days to arrive, with no communication at all, and the packaging was poor:

But wahey they've changed the colour so you can actually see the oil level (and the bend resulting from the poor packaging will probably straighten out one day).

TBH ... I had forgetten about the Ratchet

As Ive said before on here.. I use paper towel so get a good reading with clean oil

Is the new one White..??
Im not convinced mine was always the brown.. probably a light beige initially.. maybe an Off-white?

Where did you order it??
Uk FIAT.. or elsewhere
The new one is a light grey, ordered from SG Petch.

My cars dipstick started out like the new one and turned brown like the old one withing a few months. I am particualrly grateful for the ehads up on this fault and will be careful just to turn one click. I have always turned it until the symbols were the right way up. (More OCD (car)) I shall stop doing this. I have just found a suitable thing in my piles of junk to make a level checker as the dip stick is almost completely useless. I have spend an hour trying to get a few similar readings with teh dip stick and found one looks over full and another looks empty. Its a pretty serious deficiency not being able to check with greater certainty.

I thought my original was always brown , but the Panda was a 6-month old pre-reg, so maybe the dipstick started out grey and turned brown before I bought the car.

Apologies for reviving an old thread, but could any of you fine gentlemen measure the length of the dipstick from the seal to the end? Additionally, I need to know the position of the min-max markings on the bottom of the stick. I need to fashion a replacement dipstick ASAP, as it seems the shop broke mine last week without telling me. FML.

So, if anyone could provide these measurements, I would be grateful:

Wipe the stick

Dip it (without screwing..just lay at top of threads) tip should get wet

Wipe it

Screw in.. Then lay the oily part across Kitchen towel.. the oil should be evident

Ive had 9.5 years practice :)
Dip the stick. Pull it out, dry as a bone. Repeat as many times as you like. No 2 readings the same..... Or use my home made steel one and get an instant accurate reading.

My dip stick repels oil. It doesnt matter what you do with it. I can see your method would get over the oil colored dip stick issue, but only if it has a level on to read it. It is my in desparation fall back though. Thanks.

I ordered one of these after seeing your post it they sent me an email straight away saying it wasn’t compatible with my car. I have a 2013 Panda 0.9 TA 4x4. Can’t think it would be different for mine?

Panda TA Dipstick measurements
Total length 62.2cm
From the bottom the full mark is 22mm or 2.2cm up the min is 2mm up so min to max is 2 cm.
Thank you! I can also provide* the measurements (though they differ slightly) now that I have successfully removed the broken part using a (7mm) claw grabber tool and a budget (5.5mm) endoscope - the same one I used last year to help fix the pushed-in rear washer jet: here)

* Dipstick measurements:
Total length: 62.2 cm (62 cm from bottom to cap seal + 2 mm thread)
Min. mark from bottom: 4 mm
Max. mark from bottom: 2.6 cm
Min-Max distance: 2.2 cm

Removal:

Target spotted.

Got it! Grabbing the bastard felt like playing one of those claw machines from childhood (only less fun)

STUCK! The original claws were too angled and wide to pull out the dipstick, so I had to release it, partially flatten the claw bits with pliers, and then try again.

Broken dipstick removed. Notice the flattened claws.

Amzing job extracting that. What a lunatic place for the dipstick. You just have to ask why. And why noone else does it this way. I think we have the answer.....
