Vladof - Your insurance scheme seems cheaper, if at first glance a little confusing....in the UK young drivers are thoroughly raped for ins. my younger brother is paying 2.5k on a 1.2 punto 60s! (because fronting is WRONG)

rattystilo - I still don't know if mine are bent (id prefer not to replace them as the springs in mine have "settled" to quite a nice ride height lol). but if it is bent ill shoot you over a PM and some dosh sharpish. the impact was @ about 15mph, but dead on the wheel no "slide" along the curb, just dead stop...the wheel took the brunt of it, the tyre didn't even have a white mark from the curb...suppose that's an advantage of lo-pro tyres...BJV engineering (place where i got the wheels done originally) have said they'll repair my wheel (including any buckling) for £45. not too bad (y)

gadgemyster - Thanks for the offer gadge, but the gearbox should be arriving today, no need for anyone to go out of their way.

Very much the same here. "Kasko" covers my car if it's my fault - regardless of accident or damage. But the price will escalate if used, and it takes long time to build up the buffer again. The "kasko" price will drop for each damage free year.

Full "kasko" for an 18 year old driver in a rather new car with a decent engine will easily go past 5000 Euros a year. I remember my brother got quoted 3500 Euros for the Ritmo Abarth 130TC (and that was without the "kasko", just the liability part) at age 22, because of its engine and performance.

Out of curiosity what is the medium wage in Norway? :) Just to see how big of a difference it really is.

There are a lot of people with insanely huge income, that pull this statistics sky high, and is not representable for the "man in the street". If me and my wife had this number each, we would be what I'd call beyond wealthy.

Statistics for 2010 says 38.000 NOK a month (before tax), which multiples to about 450.000 NOK a year equaling about 57.000 Euro (todays exchange rate). But again, the state takes about 40% of this.

Norway is not a country you go for a cheap holiday, as prices are pretty high on everything, due to high income. The Stilo Abarth would cost about 50.000 Euro if sold new now, due to engine size (volume), 5 pots and horsepower.
 
Yes well as expected, your average income is much much higher than ours, therefore a lot of prices are a lot higher as well. Although you earn more than 7 times what we earn on medium wage, cars are still only double the price of what we have here. :) This is what I call a high standard of living.

The abarth was around 27000 E new when it was sold in Romania.

I cant remember the tyre size, but i didn't go for the standard size as they were a rip-off...cant remember who, but someone suggested a tyre size with a slightly different width that was allot more common so i went for that (worked out @ £60 per tyre for good rubber) and doesn't throw speedo out.

also, the wheel took all of the force because the curb was slightly slanted...no tyre damage at all not even a scuff mark!

and to keep continuity, i've taken ratty's offer of a strut, as the garage reckons it may be bent...thanks (y)
 
feel sorry for you mate, know the feeling, crashed my bravo the other day, £1600 to fix, needs two new doors :O

Personally would have hit the cyclist, advantage of in car camera would show I wasn't in the wrong. I would then proceed to take the swine to small claims court.

Hope the repair bill isn't to heafty (n)
 
id have no issues mowing him down, especially after the damage hes caused!.... until said person gets hurt (a little bit of pain is acceptable :p)...not happy with that if i can avoid it. TBH its just money and metal, don't compare to a life.

UPDATE:
Yesterday rattystilo dropped off some struts at the garage for me (for the cost of petrol money) (y)

this morning i get a call saying the subframe IS bent :( but they reckon a bit of heat and some re-alignment will sort it...if not then its gna have to be changed.

ETA before subframe was know bent was tomorrow...who knows now :(

EDIT: MEP...i have a feeling the repair bill will be quite hefty...no point closing my eyes to it...i reckon £800+ :(

It's not exactly the fact that you actually kill someone it is the fact that sometimes you need to chose the less worst of the worse.

While driving to the seaside in 2009 on the European road with only one lane per way as the road was turning right there was a drunk bloke on a bicycle in the middle of the road. On the other lane there a truck was coming. It was outside any city and I was doing around 100 km/h, the truck was doing around 90 km/h as well. The instant thing was to turn hard to avoid the ciclist but I ended up 30 meters in front of a 190 km/h collision so pushed the horn signaled and turned right back into my lane at the cyclist while being more or less beside him. Lucky for all of us the cyclist woke up and turned sharp right because I would have hit him no doubt. Even so I passed him at less than 30 cm and around half a meter from the truck.

I was in the car with both my sisters and my brother in law, so I don't plan, at any time, to risk the lives of the ones I love for someone who is being stupid. You can imagine I would kill a drunk cyclist instead of them anytime, and of course I wouldn't be prosecuted for anything because he was not allowed to ride the bike outside cities and was drunk on top of it all. I could even ask for repairs to my car in case I had any.

I'm not sure about UK, but bicyclists are liable for their own safety so if they don't obey the traffic rules they are responsible even though a license to ride bikes is not required. You need to be at least 14 to ride bikes on any public road anyway. It would be absurd to have it in any other way.

So what, are they going to press charges against you because they are riding their bikes on the street but disobeying any traffic rule whatsoever? :)

This seems absurd, I would sue them against so many European laws I can't even begin the list. You ride a bike, you obey the traffic rules if allowed on the street. If you are not aware of them don't do it, it's that simple. If bikes are exempted why not scooters or motorcycles? Or are these in the same boat?

Are you sure the law isn't only applicable in case you run into someone who is driving on your lane?

Human life is a priority, no matter if the cyclist is a jerk or the man on the bicycle was drunk. In these split second accidents it's doubtful that anyone would have the time to estimate who's gonna get killed and who's gonna be saved - it's an instinct. Please, watch these two videos and drive safe cause an accident can turn your life around if not end it. Accidents happen unexpectedly and could ruin your life or leave you to be but be responsible for someone’s death and that's something that's gonna haunt you for the rest of your days. Just think of how many people, whole families, children die in accidents each year, that could be anyone of us.

Yeah I remember that article.

Tbh it's completely obserd IMO. I cycle often during the summer and like to follow the rules of the road. This I do out of respect for others and fear of personal injury if I were to start jumping red lights etc.

If I did something wrong Like jump a red light on a bike and got hit & hurt I'd accept that I was in the wrong and don't see how I'd even expect to be able the say the driver was at fault when they wernt.

Infortunatly it was long before I had my in car camera that I nearly hit a PCSO on a push bike who jumped a red light in uniform! It's getting to the point where people might need to have their legs broken before they realise why rules and regs are there. If a motor cyclist jumps a red light and you hit them it's not your fault so I can't see why they can say it will be if they're on a push bike.

This is in regards to motor insurance laws. You are to blame insurance wise, which means that if you hit a bloke that is riding a bike you have to repair your car because obviously bicycles have no insurance so there was no legal background in which you could run into a bicycle with your car, him being at fault, and you trying to get it repaired through TPFT.

To be on topic, if Mehmet would have hit the cyclist he would still have had to repair his own car if he was in France, Belgium, Scandinavia, Netherlands or Germany.

I get their point of view, somebody has to pay for the damage but it is still absurde this should happen. So until this law is adopted, or another one for cyclists making it mandatory to have an insurance, then there's a gap in the system.

But still no cyclist will be able to prosecute in case it's his fault. He will need to prove the motorist is at blame to get anything out of the insurance.
