Sadly i am away friday to sunday night. Is there anyone else around rugby/Daventry area who could collect/store a gearbox till monday?

Assuming of course Mehmet goes with this gearbox. Mind you how much would it cost to courier from Shrewsbury to London?

As a thought rather than a breaker have you tried contacting a Fiat specialist mechanic. They sometimes hoard parts or might suggest a gearbox that you haven't thought about maybe Alfa 156 gearbox. there is an alfa breaker in near hemel

try Paul at a for alfa, he is a really good knowledgeable mechanic

I don't mind picking it up from Rugby, I can bring it over 4 u seeing as we're practically neighbours.

Updates....and its not good....

list of broken things all 100% KO'd:
Wishbone
Gearbox
Driveshaft
Droplink
everything that comes out of steerign rack is bent

Suspect things:
Strut
Subframe :( :(
Hub

Bodywork:
Mangles wing
Gashed wheel
Torn wheel arch liner

They cut the old mangled wishbone to get the wheel centred so they could move it...

I went to the garage this morning to talk with them, have a look and take some pics....I also dropped off a drive-shaft i got from redcorn (i explained the situation, and out of pity, gave me a drive-shaft for £10...).

The garage say they need to get a wishbone and drive-shaft on it, then check the geometry to see if subframe or strut is bent, should know by the end of the day

On the subject of the gearbox, i phoned the breaker one on ebay shadey linked earlier on, and the gearbox has 90k on it, and wouldn't be ready to collect till monday...so rang up 1st choice fiat spare (who had been holding a gearbox for me since two weeks ago) and bargained with them, gearbox being delivered straight to garage, with all the steering related bits tomorrow morning for £280.

It appears the crash was at a prticulary bad angle, which bent the wishbone, snapped the drive-shaft (broken off at the CV joint, actually sheered in half, not just dismembered) and bent and stressed out allot of other bits in that area...and there was so much force that it broke off the bottom corner of the new gearbox, hence all the oil pouring out...#

Overall, not a very good morning lol

Really shocked to read about this especially after all your hard work after the last accident with that careless lady driver that drove into you :(

I know it's of little help now but I'm convinced it's better to turn into the kerb at the very last moment and take the impact on rubber. I lost control on a round-about in Geneva one winter and was lucky not to total the car and get stranded over 600 miles from home. In my case the kerb was so high it sliced through the undercarriage protection which must have absorbed a fair bit of energy so the damage to steering was negligible.

Lets hope you get some better news (y)

hopefully so, will know as soon as they re-assemble with drive-shaft and wishbone...

i did consider going straight up the curb, but it was quite low, so wouldn't have stopped me much, I would've also hit a house if id mounted it and destroyed my front end....again lol

not to mention the house owner would probably claim on my ins. for damage to their property...

at least any news now can only be good as pretty much everything is fooked...

Just reading through all this...this is exactly the reason why I HATE cyclists...

I remember back in the day having to take a cycling proficiency test at school as part of a road safety scheme but this is just the problem - it isn't compulsory to have passed any sort of test or done any course for road safety on a bike.

Anyone thinking this should be compulsory? Even if it was free (or v. cheap) just so people have a bit of sense? The amount of cyclists I see jumping red lights or bumping up the path to get around it is shocking.

mzhussein - really feel so bad for you for what happened. I would be gutted too.

drivers take a test
are all drivers law abiding and competent?
enforcement of the present laws is whats needed
just yesterday I saw a guy nearly go over the handlebars at a set of red lights as he saw a police car at the last minute
once the car was gone he was jumping red lights
more police on the streets(as with many things) is the answer

Maybe not...but you need a certain level of skill to operate a car competently do you not? With car tests, you have to meet a certain standard before you are allowed to pass your test and carry a licence. Similarly, cyclists could do a test whereby they must show basic competency to ride bikes and exercise awareness when doing so.

It is at that point that police then become important, enforcing this afterwards :)

competency and rules of the road are different things
Im sure the guy hurtling through the lights was doing so competently
he just ignored the rules
Its all well and good throwing out sound bite type ideas but in real terms they arent going to happen
cycle test: at what age, what rules? If i drive my bike to an off road route,do i need the test?
will police be pulling over cyclists to check their licence status?
Insurance: how will it be regulated/checked
Bike Registration: how exactly would that be done? only on new bikes?
what about when i build up a frame?
again,how would that be checked?

Man I'm so sorry for this especially after what happened to me. You really broke some serious stuff in there and that's nasty. If you were going for new stuff all over it would be a write off. I don't even want to think about how much a new gearbox would cost.

But I still think it's good that you didn't ruin the pretty face of it. :) How much would your insurance fee increase if you were to go through it?

Yeah your insurances are different from Romania. We only have the mandatory insurance (CIVIL AUTO LIABILITY or RCA in Romania) good in case somebody hits you and it's their fault, and the "CASCO" insurance which is good for everything else like theft fire flod or any other kind of scratching or colission. CASCO is really expensive and can be contracted by anyone, regardless of age (a minimum of 18, of course). The only difference is that you will pay around 150E more per year if you are under 25.

I pay 700E and I was 23 at the time I got my Stilo insured. The car's value is fixed and is written in the contract, according to the factory price and the depreciation chart which is a killer because after 7 years your car is only worth 25% of its value. "Lucky" for us cars are very expensive to begin with, so my Stilo has a market price of almost 20000E (new) and according to the depreciation chart it is still ensured at 5000. :) After my accident the insurance will grow with 25%.

Anyway, this only happens on CASCO. The mandatory RCA insurance is good if somebody hits you and it's their fault would only give me around 2000 E to fix my car.

I won't go offtopic any longer, I'm just amazed on how different your country is from mine in regards to insurance. Makes a lot more sense of course the way you have them, but then again that's why you can buy a Stilo with one minimum wage there and in Romania you would need...hmmm.. 34 :)

That's a shame to see your lovely looking Stilo like that mzhussein. I hope you get it all sorted out easily enough so you can enjoy it again :)

As i said earlier, i have a pair of struts and springs off my car (jtd) which i am sure will fit. The car has done 80k but the suspension was in great shape when it came off to make way for the coilies. They have also had the all important spring bed mod done.

I can get them down to you Monday.
