Technical Sump removal

Leaving my parents on the way to catch ferry home, Marea 2.0 20v bottomed on an unmade road. A mile or so later, on the oil light came on. Yep, hole in the sump! Limped back to parents & borrowed my dad's car to get back to the Isle of Man. So, I need to sort out the Marea. One possibility is to patch the hole with epoxy, metal plate & pop rivets & try & make the 50 mile trip home where I can repair it at my leisure. Or I can remove the sump & get it welded up over there. Fortunatley the hole is on the left hand side, clear of the cooling fins. I've done a search on sump removal, but there's not much detail. Looks like a drive shaft has to come off. Anybody done it & can tell me exactly what's involved, how long it might take & what tools I might need?

i've never taken the sump off this model before but ive done a few cars over the years and usually they just pull off with a lot of force once the bolts are removed, on a couple of cars i had to loosen the gearbox to get the sump clear, but never heard of driveshaft removal been neccessary. if it seems difficult to get off once all the bolts are removed try removing the sump plug and then stick a bar in the plug hole to lever the sump off, this may damage the threads on the sump plug if you arent careful, but getting the sump off with its old gasket holding it on can be difficult.

Does the exhaust skim through bulges in the sump like it does on the JTD Marea/Bravo? If so you may need to remove it from the manifold.

my old 20v had a small oil leak from the sump, and was quoted £200 to get it fixed, the mechanic said was because he had to split the driveshafts or something like (couple of years ago now).

in that case maybe welding the damage would be the best option.
