hello all have just joined the fiat forum i have a 1972 fiat 500l have a small oil leak from sump area , can anyone tell me if fitting a new sump gasket is straightforward, and also if the drain plug has a rubber seal. regards to all geoff

Hi Geoff,
Fitting a sump gasket is pretty simple- just clean up the surfaces, fit the gasket dry and be careful not to overtighten the bolts or the gasket will split. Often the leak isn't the sump gasket and it can be from the crankshaft rear main seal. There is no seal on the sump plug- it is a tapered thread and seals when tightened. The best thing to do is to remove the flywheel cover plate, degrease the whole bottom thoroughly and then recheck after a drive. If the oil is coming from behind the flywheel it is most likely the rear seal which is an engine or gearbox out job- not too difficult however!
Best Wishes, Damon

Hi Geoff,

The sump is held on with 16 x 10mm bolts - 4 in each corner and 3 along each edge. It can be removed with the engine in situ. A couple of them at the front of the engine near the clutch housing are a bit tricky to get at, but not impossible.

While you've got it off, clean all of the crap out of the air channel on the bottom of the sump as this is where air is circulated for oil cooling. Over time it gets dinged, dented and fills with dirt, grease and grime until it's no longer effective.

My plug is a 17mm hex head with no gasket - see picture.

If you haven't already, post some photos sometime.

Chris
