Hi guys
I got a friend to fit a new coolant temp sensor today. And I'll hand him over to you Now,
Hi, whilst I was replacing the sensor I was a bit surprised to find that NO coolant came out after I had undone the old sensor . Considering that the coolant MAX Level is above the position of the sensor I presumed that coolant would pour out ? Anyway have replaced the censor and everything looks to be ok but on test drive some fluttering of the temp gauge was still evident.
When car is stationary with engine running gauge needle stays absolutly solid. It's only when driven that it startd to fluctuate.which makes me feel certain that it's an electrical fault.
Cheers

Do you mean you replaced the thermostat? Coolant temp sensor?

Still sounds electrical to me and not being sure what you have changed I wouldn't comment on the coolant not coming out.

I have 1999 Bravo 1.2 and have suffured similar temp gauge fluctuations ( i don't any more).
The story:-
used to get gurgling behind the dash in the heater pipes on the odd occasion when forced to drive on faster roads from a coldish engine but otherwise no problems. Water level always OK
In baking heat on a fast run temp gauge would rocket up, too fast for water temperature to rise that quickly. Never ignore that of course but underbonnet checks (you can telll if engine is running too hot, engine smells different, giving off too much heat, found no problem. Water level OK

Overfilled water level a small amount by accident. No gurgling! No temperature gauge going berserk.

Since then I've always filled to 1/2" approx 1 cm ABOVE max level no more than that mind you. One year on, end of problem.

Probable fault with 1.2s.... Coolant starvation? You've found no coolant coming out of water temp sensor. Maybe with no coolant the housing goes to raw engine temp then water rushes through. Could be the same with yours.

Undoing a small thing like the coolant temp sensor (did you replace the right one as there are usually 2) usually won't let any coolant out. The thermostat will be closed and the rest of the system is sealed. If you'd taken the rad cap off then you would have had a leak.
