yay custard was right. only thing i can think is after disconnecting the rca the HU detects no RCA and shuts down the signalmase said:yes mate i got it sorted in the end...
and it turns out it was exactly the same as that... as i have never had the instruction manual for the headunit i didnt have a clue, it got re-set to factory settings somewhere along the line, 5 mins fiddling and we are back rocking.
(this is of course after ive changed the RCA cable so that could of been part of the problem as well)
