General Stuck in 3rd gear

Hello,
I have a 2008 2.0Lt panel van,the other morning just left home just after 10 min of driving my gears would1nt go in only 3rd gear had to drive it to the mechanic which he was quick to say I need a new gear box.
Can anyone please help me and has anyone had the same problem?

Do you mean it will only go in third or it is stuck in third?

Either way I'd get the linkage checked first could easily be something like the cable

Yes it only goes in to 3rd
