You do'nt have to bin uConnect to remove the warning "beeps and bongs". One just has to dig a little deeper into the setting for Nav and you can turn all of them off. I left speed camera warnings on.
I too have a Garmin with lifetime maps. I updated my uConnect TomTom maps during the free period and then at a later date TomTom offered me a years updates on a special offer. This has now expired (Dec 2818) so for long planned journeys abroad I use the Garmin. The uConnect is Nav is an emergency fall back option.
