Hi there,

New to the forum!

I have a Stilo 1.6 04 and recently there has been a whistling which sounds like it is coming from the Rear Drivers side.

My instinct was that it was something to do with the brakes and when I spoke to a mechanic and explained what I heard, his instinct was either the brakes are too tight or lose.

Is this something anyone else has encountered and if so, was it an easy fix?

Thanks!!

Yes, could be a sticking pad. As varesecrazy says, the offending caliper will be hot.

You can always stick your finger on the caliper rather than the disc. The disc will get hot enough to burn your finger off but the caliper will be hot but not too bad. You'll be let out of hospital after a day or two.

You'll need to take the pads out and make sure they are move freely in the caliper (i.e. not jammed). Cheaper pads tend to have mis-shapen or inaccurately sized back plates so tend to be tight when new and then if the plate rusts after a while, it expands which makes the problem worse. You might need to just file off any rust, scabs or dirt then put some copper grease around the plate and slot it back into place.

New pads might be a better idea. I use Brembo and the difference in fit for just a few quid more is worth it.

If the caliper is tyred and just not putting enough pressure on the pads, then you can clean up and re-grease the sliding pins. A whole new pins and gaitors set is less than a tenner so could be worth it if yours are rusted and horrible.

Any progress ?

Hi guys,

Thanks so much for the help!

I ended up taking it to the garage yesterday and the calipers just needed some TLC.

Back on the road and purring away.

Thanks again!
