Hi all!
So i have a few new symptoms! Sorry this may be alittle long, My issue is as follows: I was driving home on some back roads doing just under 60mph, when all of a sudden my car Started to lose all power, for example i would have my foot completely to the floor and the speed would still be slowly falling, i even tried pumping the accelerator but to no avail, this would repeat, and the engin would suddenly gain power and kick off like mad! I just about made it home, and this morning when i tried my car all i get when i put my foot down is burst of acceleration, and this is stalling my car and making it undrivable, the car is okay and starts up fine first time but i can't use her! Please help me save the old girl she is my first car and i love her to bits! She's a Fiat Stilo 1.9 JTD, 55 plate. Thanks again! (n)

Try adjusting the brake pedal switch - it's located above the pedal.

Hold the brake pedal down then pull the switch plunger out as far as it will go. You should hear the switch plunger ratchet as you pull it.

When the plunger is extended, let the pedal up slowly to it's rest position. You should hear the ratchet again.

If you need to fit a new switch, there's a guide in the Stilo Guides section.

This sounds like a fuel pump problem... or camshaft (TDC) sensor ... although you say it idles okay.. normally a TDC sensor failure stops the car and it might re-start later when it's cooler.. but not always immediately).

Check that the fuel pump relay is secure/dry/connected... similarly the fuel pump fuse.

Also check the wiring to / around the fuel cut-off valve (give it a press to make sure it's firmly "on") in the passenger footwell.

If they check out, you'll have to get the spanners out. Check that diesel juice comes out at the fuel rail when you crank the car (cold engine though... saves giving the beast a premature Viking Burial.. :D )

If you have fuel... then check the pressure in the fuel rail. You'll need a pukka mechanic/gauge to do this. Your regulator may be on the blink or you could have a good ol' fashioned fuel pump failure.

When was the last time you changed the fuel filter doodah in the engine bulkhead? It would have to be ancient/cheapo' brand to cause a severe problem... but if it has an "in" and an "out" then it could somehow be blocked.. though you car accelerates from time to time... which is why I think it's more a dicky or intermittent pump than an outright "failure" or blockage.

You do have diesel in the tank and not chip oil, water or turps isn't it?
