Stepper motor/ sender unit??

My mate who is a mechanic has told me that my 1.4 P Bravo needs a new stepper motor as the fuel economy is utter crap and the engine is sounding like a clapped out fiesta. Any one know whether the stepper motor is another name for the fuel sender unit or a completely different thing? And how much would one cost?
