Punto (Mk1) Steering Problems

Hi i have got a V reg 1.2 Fiat punto with a steering fault.
The warning light does not come on and i do not loose power steering
but the steering seems to get stuck when attempting to turn left or right and i have to use a bit of force to get the wheel to turn, As it sticks there is a grinding noise from the steering system under the dash, The fault is intermittent but getting worse,

Anyone got any ideas of cheap fix

Is it electronic or belt driven pump?

First thoughts are maybe fubared outer CV joint(s)..........

welcome to the forum, are you 100% sure you have a mk1?

does the warning light come on as it should during self checks before you start engine?

Yes all the warning lights come on and go off again.

Car is now at M.O.T station, so fingers and all toes crossed !

But if it passes, what are you going to do?

i hate it when that happens, get a noise cant find out why so change every thing, take it for mot see if they can spot whats wrong, then end up with a pass an still no idea what's wrong

Well no surprises it failed MOT.
steering problem apparently or at least for mot purpose was lower u/j pinch bolt loose and steering column universal joint insecure.

But lot of welding got to be done so its bye bye car
