Technical Steering problem

The weekend has issues..

Pulling gently out of a car park the battery light came on and the steering went heavy. Was worried it was a battery issue however its starting the car fine.

it's got fluid but the steering has no assistance at all. Can't see any leaks. Suggestions please? Trip to Stanford is off unless I can get it back on the road.

did you check the belt(s)

I've not checked the belts yet. They would have been changed with the cam belt yes? That was only done a month or so ago.

if its a seperate power steering belt then unlikely.it may be the power steering belt has gone and just caught the alternator belt on its way causing the charging glitch

Well the belt is still there, well it's now in the hallway so that it doesn't come off! Belt was uber loose so needs tensioners setting up.

ah well,nothing wrong with an obvious(notice i didnt say easy)fix

Looks like the tensioner has failed. It's supposed to be spring mounted but the spring has given up. Easy job to fix hopefully.

Crank pulley off. Tensioner off. New one on. Crank pulley on. Belt on, pull back tensioner, slide belt over and release.
