A few weeks ago I hit a curb because I had a blow out of my front driver side tyre.
As I was only doing 15-20 mph not much damage was done to the car (other than a flat tyre)

I have now had a new tyre fitted but the steering is very in-consistent, what I mean by that it when im parked or driving if I have my hands at 12 o’clock on the wheel and turn either left or right the wheel will be hard to turn then loose for a few inches then tight again for a few inches etc etc either way at any speed.

A friend of mine and I will take a look at the weekend but does anyone have any ideas what would be bent? I imagine it’s the part that the steering wheel is attached to as I assume it is bent and there for pressing on the rack then just about making contact as it rotates.

Does anyone have an exploded diagram of the cinq or the suspension?

It would be a huge help

Many thanks

The steering rack is bent. I don't have any pictures but it will have moved on its mounts or actually bent itself. Take it off and try it by hand. If it runs smoothly then the pinion attachment is out of alignment.

cheers rallycinq.

I thought so I just wanted to get a 2nd opinion.

Would you suggest that it could be corrected / repaired or best to just replace it with a new one?
I just want to make sure so I get one sorted and drop it in if needed.

Many thanks for the advice

I have just got a cinq with the same said problem which i cured today it was my steering rack which i could see was bent from underneath on a ramp replaced today took bout 1.5 hours and cost £38 (plus £30 returnable surcharge)

The part where the steering is easy and then hard you will proberbly find is it has a slight bend in part of the ram and where the bend goes through the shaft it does'nt fit correct hense it's hard to turn then when it leaves the shaft it will become easy again

One thing I did'nt mention was mine was without power steering if ur's has power steering the process of changing/price will be more but still reasonbly easy if u have decent ramps/axle stands or acces to a lift(2 poster if possible)

There is a bolt on inside of car the secures steering colum to steering rack by way of .....can't think of name now poo......well it's like a universal joint but u get your steering wheel straight then clamp with anything to hand then undo trackrod ends completly then there is 2 bolts holding the whole rack to the body then just a case of monouvering from car....Hope this has been to some help to you (y)

Just don't FORGET TO GET TRACKING DONE or you will just eat away yours tyres

Hi,
Could be one of two things, you've either damaged the pinion teeth inside the steering rack(new rack needed) or damaged the Universal Joint between the steering rack and the bottom of the steering column (New UJ needed).
I had that steering on a mk3 Fiesta, Easy, hard, easy, hard etc...
