My wife put £35 worth of petrol in at asda,drove 7 miles to work,then drove 9 miles home before it conked, my first question was have you put diesel in, she's adamant she put petrol in. She said there was no smoke ,when it does start (ish) theres no smoke

The MAF sensor won't affect idle or revs... it'll just not run well, burn more fuel etc.. but it will otherwise appear to run as "normal".
If your beast is not idling then I'd look at the idle control valve (ICV). It's likely to be part of the throttle body assembly (usually a black module on top of the metal part of the housing. It's either full of soot/oily deposit.. or it's disconnected/not giving a signal to the ECU.
I'm guessing that a clogged/unresponsive ICV will not log any fault codes, since it may be giving a reading, albeit an incorrect one (e.g. "off", when actually the engine wants "on").

Sound advice above, It was the maf sensor,I took it off ,cleaned it,put it back on ,cars back to normal ,feels powerful after driving my wife's Clio for a few days I tell you ! My diagnostic tool was spot on .thanks for all your help lads. One thing I can't understand is how the stilo wasn't that popular,its a fantastic car very underated and in my 3 years experience ultra reliable ,BUT WHY DIDNT FIAT FIT A TURBO TO THE ARBARTH ,IDIOTS !
