Technical Starting probs

Rite recently my car has been making a very nasty screeching kinda noise when i go to start it basically it makes the noise but the engine doesn't turn over B). Sometimes it does it other times its fine or another thing u hear is a bang then it starts turning over. The engine runs fine once its started my m8 reckons the Starter motor is on its way out any ideas on how much to replace and how hard?

It's either the starter motor or the teeth on the flywheel, probably the starter. You can get recon ones for a lot less than a new one, and it's a fiddly job to do as access isn't brilliant.
