the problem is when you turn the key to start nothiing happens all the normal light come on but the starter motor is doing nothing not even a click the battery is all good so im thinking either starter motor is gone or might just be a bad earth ? could some one give me heads up as to how many earth straps the car has and where abouts they are regards gordon

you could try putting a jump lead between the engine and the battery negative post and seeing if it starts then?

will take the bad earth out of the equation.

check your main live feed to the starter and your ignition feed to the solenoid too, but these are a pain to get on as its all round the back of the engine. (on a diesel anyway, easier on a petrol).

try tapping the starter solenoid with as hammer while getting someone to keep the key in the crank position too, if it starts then youve got a sticky starter solenoid.

the very same thing happened to me the other day. i checked all the fuses in the engine bay (on the right near the battery) and they were all ok. so i tried the starter again and it fired up first time.

:bang:

then it would'nt go into reverse

just done the test with the jump lead between the engine and neg post started first time does this mean i have a bad earth on the car ? and how many earth straps are on the car and there location regards gordon

yeah sounds like it.

the only engine earth i can remember is the one bolted to the gearbox, which then bolts to the inner wing and on up to the battery.

check the lead to see if its broken, if youve got a multimeter check it for continuity and voltage drop.

if you havent and the lead looks okay physically check all the bolts are tight, if they are remove the lead, clean all the points where it attaches to something with a nice bit of P40, rebuild it all and it should be a starter after that.

thanks matt will get it done tomorrow if the rain stops lol and i will let you know how i get on thanks for your input regards gordon (y)

found the lead snapped at the gear box bought a new one for £4 and fixed it and job was done easy fix thanks matt sister in law now as happy as a pig in **** lol :)
