How in gods name do you get the starter motor out? The missus burned it out when she was trying to re start when it was out of fuel... didn't see the light on

Can you get bushes for it or do i have to replace the full unit?

Unless you fancy a shower of sparks in your eyes, I'd disconnect the battery first, just to be safe.(y)

There are two bolts that undo from...

Actually 3 bolts on a good day, 13mm heads. You'll need to remove the under engine shield for the starter area if it still exist as well. Are you sure the battery just hasn't been flattened? Would be best/easiest to charge up just in case before tackling the starter...

Labtech, your knowledge of a shower of sparks....is that from experience? :D

charged the battery up all night (with a massive charging unit for a friend) then tried to start it and nothing. I tapped the starter with a hammer then tried, it clicked a bit then stopped. As a last thing i'm going to try jumping it off the works van (merc sprinter...or a dodge sprinter where ever you are from) then try hitting it with a hammer, if that doesn't work then i will cry :(

By the sound of it littlephil, your starter needs removal to check it out, so start crying:)
however, it may just need a good clean, brushes or maybe a solenoid.. It's a simple unit and overhaul shouldn't cost a lot from a specialist:)
@Yap.. Enough of your cheek or I'll report ya to a moderator!!

I took mine off a while back and decided to pull it apart to give it a clean before I put it back. It's fairly straightforward to do - here's a pic of the bits you'll find inside it (y)

Right, i've pulled the starter, cleaned it and stripped it. In the bench the solenoid give a good old bang but when i tested the motor nothing happened. When is stripped it i found that the commutor and brushes were black. I've cleaned everything best i can and will give the motor a bench test tomorrow before i refit it. Do you reckon that the black commutor could be the problem?

The commutor tends to go black anyway just from the dust generated by the carbon brushes. Give it a good clean and see what happens - if it really overheated you would normally find it is the windings that get damaged...

I'm pretty sure a blackened commutator wouldn't help mate, but cleaning it off should..
As long as all the teeth are there and not loose or any obviously broken or burnt wires coming from them, you should be good to go..
Good luck with the bench test tomorrow:)

how old is your x1/9 and where are you? depending on what engine it is, it could be either the electric fuel pump (for state spec injection) or the the starter is spinning and not turning the engine.

NEED MORE IMPUT!!!

its a 1988 x19, were in wolverhampton.
Its not the fuel pump i tested it and sprayed fuel all over my bfs dads buick LOL!

is the engine trying to turn over? Won't be your fuel pump then as it's probably mechanical. If your starter is just wirring when you try to start it and not engaging the engine then you need a new starter motor. Easy enough job, bastard to get to though.

Nah not trying to turn over at all just the wiring noise.
I've took the starter motor out and it appers the bendix is stiff, cant even move it backwards very well by hand.
Bushes are ok but its absoultly rammed full of carbon!

Is it worth lubeing the bendix up and removing the carbon and trying to bench start it. It don't look in bad condition really i think its just pissed off it was put in a scrap yard ahah!

If your solenoid is good and its your starter motor, i've got a good motor with dead solenoid if you want that for cost of postage? Or come and pick it up? (i'm in manchester though)
