Right decision to get it to the mechanics !
Auricks smartly suggested the earth/ground trick, but I would NOT recommend the +12V to solenoid one, UNLESS you know exactly what you do ! There is almost no space down there and you could easily make a nice short with a screw driver or a spanner and with the high current available on the starter terminals it could result in a disaster, not less ...
The right method is:
- disconnect negative battery terminal.
- disconnect the starter' solenoid connector.
- connect a strong(ish) 2.5mm² wire with a crimped lung to the solenoid
- run that wire next to the battery area
- reconnect the negative terminal
- touch the positive terminal with the wire you connected to the solenoïd (beware of sparks):
The starter relay should click, and engine crank ... (assuming battery is charged and earthing is ok)
- if like above: that part is good, problem comes from the command circuit
- if clicks only with no crank: the starter motor (or relay/solenoïd/puller) is dead
- if no click: the solenoid is dead
And BTW if anyone decide to crawl under his car, ALWAYS have it resting on stable jacks (2), NEVER EVER go under with the only lifter installed !!
