Many thanks buddy.

Still cang get it to start..replaced with a new battery..no change. Neighbour helped me push it..bump started twice it started and then just died again..any idea what iy could be? When the key turns nothing happens engine dosnt crank no sound no movement? Cheers

You should be more accurate, "where is the starter" doesn't tell us that you got starting issue...

What are the symptoms, what have you done so far ?

Hi bernie i thought i would locate starter and try and tap it or see if wiring to starter was ok. After doing a search itbwas pointing at that.

However cars not mine sonen route i picked up a new battery turnes the key nothing..bump started the car twice both times it started but then switched off again. When the key is turnes igniotion lighys all come on but nothing else happens wont crank. Owner tells me that the day before a burning smell occured for a couole of seconds maybe linked. Out of ideas!

Possible corroded earth cables.
(It might have already burned up something else)
Run a jump cable from the negative battery terminal... to a nice, clean metal part of the gearbox. Try to crank now.

Tried the above to no avail. However have noticed padlock and key symbol on i assume imobiliser aswell as steering and abs light staying on..messed about with the key and imobiliser went off when turning the key i got a buzzing sound from the left hand side towards the fuse box? Assume its imobilser at fault

Engine WILL crank even with a immobilizer problems.

I would recommend getting the car up on a lift or jack stands, crawl underneath and run +12v to the solenoid.. the solenoid should move the starter pinion to engage the flywheel and send power to the starter.

IF the starter is good the engine should crank.

Think im gona get it towed to garage im at work all week and wont get the chance to have a look at it..as old dear needs the car. Appreciate the input guys..fingers crossee it gets sorted im stumped! Lol

Right decision to get it to the mechanics !

Auricks smartly suggested the earth/ground trick, but I would NOT recommend the +12V to solenoid one, UNLESS you know exactly what you do ! There is almost no space down there and you could easily make a nice short with a screw driver or a spanner and with the high current available on the starter terminals it could result in a disaster, not less ...

The right method is:

- disconnect negative battery terminal.
- disconnect the starter' solenoid connector.
- connect a strong(ish) 2.5mm² wire with a crimped lung to the solenoid
- run that wire next to the battery area
- reconnect the negative terminal
- touch the positive terminal with the wire you connected to the solenoïd (beware of sparks):

The starter relay should click, and engine crank ... (assuming battery is charged and earthing is ok)

- if like above: that part is good, problem comes from the command circuit
- if clicks only with no crank: the starter motor (or relay/solenoïd/puller) is dead
- if no click: the solenoid is dead

And BTW if anyone decide to crawl under his car, ALWAYS have it resting on stable jacks (2), NEVER EVER go under with the only lifter installed !!
