Technical Starter motor alternative

Ok, so the starter in my 500F finally went out. It's got a 126 motor in it. Looking at replacement starters I got a bit of a sticker shock looking at having one shipped to the US from GB or Italy, after shipping and no core(shipping) i'm looking at almost 350 USD. I've found some tractor starters that claim they are for the 500 also, but don't know if anyone has experience with these. Are most starters the same size and will they mate up with my bendex gear and mounting plate for the tranny?

Do you think a regular alternator repair shop would be able to rewind mine or do they need specific parts from Italy?

First of all, welcome to the forum!

Having done a quick search it does seem that starter motors are difficult to find.

Assuming you are based in Italy, I would have thought you would stand a better chance than most of tracking one down.

I am sure somebody on here probably has an engine they may be keeping for spares - you could always try an ad in the "Wanted" section of the classified ads on the forum.

I got one from there recently and they were great, fast postage to Australia.
Bought heaps of parts in the past from these guys and never had a problem.
