Technical Squeeling break problem! please help!

I fitted Mintex disks and pads to my front about two months ago, breaking was excellent! But the squeel made my ears bleed. So i got a set of green stuff pads... breaking seems to be better but the squeal was still there.

My answer lay in a bottle of red hardening rubber called Siloo anti squeal from the states... cost me about £3.00 from ebay. I covered the rear of the pads and left to set. then replaced them. Hey no more squeal. The only answer really is to get the plates for the back of the pads as the original fiat pads have these attached, I removed them to use again but had no way of attatching them to the new pads so i went for the red Siloo stuff instead.

EBC will send you backing pads if you ask them (at least they did for me) although you still have to cut them to fit.

original brake pads from fiat have shims attached to them, that should stop the squeeling.
It did on mine when i put their new ones back on.
Welshman

Thats right welshman and how many of the aftermarket companies follow that ..only ebc with their pads as far as I can recollect with the adhesive pads they enclose with their brake pads ..

Nice user name by the way welshman (y) do you live in wales ? another contender for our welsh meets maybe :chin:

I know this is a really old thread... but after changing my pads to EBC Ultimax pads with the standard discs, they squealed like mad! I applied copper grease to the backings but it didnt help. Eventually i went looking for brake shims. Found some universal shims on ebay and fitted them last week. No more squeal! Only cost me £3 but they've sold out however they can be found for a fiver here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Universal-Sel...s_SM?hash=item3a53ab86f6&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

I might one day go for the mintex pads and discs, knowing they naturally squeal, i hope the universal shims do the job... :yum:

I fitted rear pads on my Stilo the other week and they don't squeek! EBC Ultimax like you have, only difference is on the rear! I also gave my calipers a right good clean before I changed the pads, cleaning the piston face too.

lots of copperslip, although I did clean some of it off when I cleaned my calipers again.

My original Fiat pads on the back always dragged and squeeked a bit when reversing but now they are silent! :)

The universal shims idea is interesting. I fitted matched Mintex pads and discs all round about 6 months ago and they haven't squealed at all, which I put down to coating them in Mintex Ceratec paste. Highly recommended and cheap to buy from eBay (although my local motor factor now sells it too). Seems like a brilliant alternative to good-old copper grease - it ended up being used in my sunroof runners and on my clutch pedal too! (y)

The Mintex brakes are a great improvement btw for anyone thinking about it on a budget - can't vouch for the alternatives though I'm sure they're probably more expensive.

It only cost me £3 for the shims so even if they didnt work, i wouldn't of minded. Thankfully they did work and my brakes no longer squeal. All thanks to a bit of 3M sticky stuff...

Cheers, I'll get hold of some in case mine shows any signs of squealing or for my next pads. Means more Ceratec slippery stuff to shut the other creaks and groans up with!

I only get a squeel when reversing and only from the rear! 2006 JTD MW, happened a few month from new. Fiat changed the rear pads at the first service, something about a known issue and different compound. OK for a few more months, but returned. As I don't reverse that often compared to the more normal forward driving direction I'm not that bothered any more. :p

A groaning noise from the rear pads when braking in reverse is not that unusual. I get it occaisonally in my Shcumi and have had it before in VAG cars. Audi even designed a retro-fit rubber damper to clamp onto the caliper to stop it.

I think it's something to do with the pads setting up a vibration due to the pad/disc interface going 'against the grain' when the disc turns in reverse.

Ive decided its time to replace/upgrade my discs and pads all round.

Trawling through ebay theres a set of grooved discs & ebc "ultimax" pads for £150...
or a set of grooved discs & ebc redstuff pads for £200.

Is there much difference between ultimax and redstuff to justify the £50 difference?

Ive also seen i can get a full set mintex pads and discs for about £120

Whats peoples opinions on which is the best deal?

Both ultimax and red stuff are made by EBC..ultimax are an alternative OEM replacement where as the red stuff are more for track days and not road usage..but some still fit them..If you fit the mintex pads then the sqealing will take you to new hights of the problem..well known for mintex pads to do this because of the compound they use..

I have a set of Mintex discs and pads bought from E-Bay before Christmas, I've had no squeals from them at all. They are a significant improvement on the brakes that were on before, which were FIAT pads and I assume the original FIAT discs. Use lots of copper grease on the pad backs, and lots on the claiper slides and pins. That way there is little change of squeal. The Mintex discs are also coated in hard varnish rather than just grease. Still need degreasing, but then a layer of varnish is left on the disc. Comes off in use, but means the rest of the disc resists rust (At least until I put a good dollop of alloy wheel cleaner on them! Which turned out to be very silly, as the hub section has gone brown.)
