I've noticed over the past few days I've been getting a small squeak on startup of my Doblo. It's just as the engine bites and starts up I hear it, but not when it's turning over (all for a split second before it does bite). I've ruled out any belts as they don't squeak at all even under acceleration/high revs, so could this indicate a problem with the starter motor? Engine mounting bushes? Could just be due to the wet and me being picky though :p

Are you 100% sure its not the belt that drives the alternator. With the glow plugs still on the load on the alternator will be very high as soon as the engine starts to turn, hence a tendancy for the belt to slip on the pulley.

Hmmm, perhaps I can test this by leaving it a while after the glow plug light has gone off, and see if it squeaks when I start it then?

I'm not too worried about it just yet, but it could be a developing problem - you never know! :)

Hi Ozzie

Sounds like a belt to me too. I hope it doesn't sound like my mother-in-law's old ( Bad Dog ) Rover 400. That could be heard in Wales!! :p

Anyway when your engine is running why not squirt a tiny spray of WD40 into the belt. That usually gets rid of a squeaky belt if its not so loose as needing adjustment. (y)

Hmm, I haven't heared it at all today, but it's been dryer so could have just been some water on the belt causing the squeak. I've also been making sure to turn off all electrics, radio, heater etc. and waiting for the glow plug light to go off for 5 seconds before starting.

If it persists in wetter weather I'll try the WD40 approach :p

Hi Ozzie, now I've read this about a squeak on start up, and your coolant loss on the other thread, I'm convinced your water pump is on its way out.

hi,, i had this problem b4 the bushes of the pulley went out..

the slight sound only lasted for a while, every morning, when engine was being start, it lasted for abt 2 weeks or so, b4 the pulley bush gave way.

for my case, the bushes failed, pulley broke the belt, and part of the belt went into the timing belt area and jam up the timing.

another mate of mine's , had his power steering's hose broken by the broken aux belt.

over at singapore, yes, the failure of the pulley bush is common

mine failed at 75000 km,, my mates's 50000km
divide by 1.6 for miles

suggest you get your check out soon..

Hi Ozzie,
This happened to me too. I'd forgotten.
Still just under warranty.

I'd been getting a squeak for a few weeks on start up, on and off. I thought it would right itself and put it down to dampness or whatever.
Then, one , morning on the way to work, there was a bang and I had a perpetual rattle under the bonnet - and no power steering!

Bugger!

So I drove it anyway - heavy to say the least - to my dealer a mile away and they diagnosed a broken pulley, or whatever.
It was fixed that day.

Sorry to be so vague about what it was, but obviously this is not unknown.
Get it looked at by someone who knows what they are doing.
