ok you will have to put picks up i think they would look mint to. my running lights are quite a wide beam of light lol but they are only ran off the sig lighter and aint that bright, but they good for going around yard in dark without draining ya bat out

a couple of 3" holes shouldn't be that much of a problem....

A couple of 8mm holes to bolt lights to would probably be OK but I think 3" holes would be too much. The reinforcing bar can't be much wider than that.

Bear in mind that the bar will take most of the force of a front impact. If it's weakened too much, it may absorb too much of a the impact or collapse too early and prevent the front airbag sensor behind the grille from sending the correct signal to activate the airbags.

If it was anything other than a JTD with intercooler, I would have investigated the possibility of getting the 2008 Brazilian Stilo auxiliary light fittings, but they would be more suitable as fog light being so low.
.

I have to agree with Davren.
Cutting two 3 inch holes in something thats designed to absorb forces in a crash might not be a sensible thing to do.

I'm still not sure squeezing it is the answer, but as its designed to do that sort of thing anyway maybe its not so bad?

Plus Mark really likes the idea and wants them fitted. Oh yeh, and my free night of Guinness is at risk if I dont. ;)

the cross rail is made of high tensile steel iirc for obvious reasons of strength good luck cutting or drilling it (not that i would recommend it)

also as they are DESIGNED to crumple and squash in a crash i highly doubt they are made from high tensile steel, which is specifically engineered to resist tensile stresses, such as pulling, pushing and flexing....you wouldnt want one of those to snap in a crash....

He's single, but I get your point.

The choice is his and I plan to keep the adjustment to a minimum.
Might even add more to the rear of the crossrail than I take from the front in an atempt to balance things back up?

I don't think that will work...because there isn't one at the back as far as i remember (i could well be wrong)...also you'd only benefit from this if the car was being sandwiched...in a frontal collision a small extension at the back wont be doing any good.

I think you miss read what I said.

Add a little extra to the rear of the crossrail not the rear of the car. (y)

i was thinking "shadeyman seems intelligent, why on earth would he suggest that"....lol i must be more ill than i first thought...yeah i see no reason why doing what you actually said (not what i thought you said) wouldnt suffice, sorry bout that...

this is slightly related to the topic, in-that i also want to add spots to the front of mine, but in the grills (like the brazillian stilo)

but i want to use these

Ive got a chrome clip on bezel to make em look good, but i need to make them watertight...as you can see several gaping holes....any ideas??

They look like HID's, are they?
Out of a BMW or Merc?

Was they part of the headlights?

If not do you have the part they originally bolted into, bumper, grill etc.?
HID's get hot, probabely best to use the original part.

If they're not part of the headlights, I'd probabely try and graft the area of the original part into the grill of your Stilo some how, then bolt them in as originally designed.

If they are part of the headlights can the part they bolted to be removed and used, perhaps grafted into the grill?

They are HID projectors, from a merc common slang name (easiest way to find on google lol) is hella E55, they are bi-xenon projectors made by Hella, used in merc E55's and some BMW's....they are the same as the ones i grafted in as my dipped beams.

All i have is the projector and the bezel unfortunatley, got them imported from turkey from some smashed up cars...

ive found through playing that actually, they do am AMAZING job of reflecting the heat compared to the cheapo ones ive seen, i can hold the cup of the projector while its on, even after its been on for 30 mins or so...

I dont have access to any other bits of the mec lights :( thats all ive got to work with...i was thinking something like suspending them in a downpipe? simple solution lol

Plastic drainpipe goes soft in summer sun so I'd defo give that a miss ... ;)

I've used fiberglass and stainless steel mesh to make the wedge shaped washers I needed. Was easy to work with and easily fixed to the plastic bumpers using a heavy duty 2 part glue.

As the light will be low down it really does need to be completely enclosed(apart from the lens) to keep the water out, so the heat they produce might become a problem.

If you plan to fit them as spot lights(wired to the high beam) you could fit them in the grill either side of the badge. Might get away with only covering the front part leaving the "cup of the projector" exposed to help reduce the build up of heat.

I've purchased a second hand cross rail, should be delivered tomorrow. A friend will be having a look at ways to alter it without interfering with its function too much because I would like to install similar spots to Marks on our Multiwagon. Marks do look good, sorry no pics, not sure why but he asked me not to upload them.(he's just left my place, popped in to show em off)

My mate Mark wrote his car off last night. Driving home down the same country lanes he's drove down for the past 4 years he turned a corner(a bit too quickly) to find a couple parked up with no lights on, he swerved to miss them, lost control on a grass verge and hit a tree head on.

The "Cross Rail" I altered is now in the radiator but it still did its job. The airbags deployed and Mark is unharmed.
