General Sporting Top speed.?

I know where you mean. I do that about twice a month. That was one of the factors why I upgraded from a 899cc Cinq. Oh and also I live at the top of a hill and it couldn't pull more than 37mph up it. New Sei does 60! wahey!

I bet your car would do something you don't want it to! You could do a 0-60 (pull away in 3rd/4th!) in less than a second but having no resistance is going to have some pretty odd consequences surely?

A car would obviously run quicker on a stand, but remember there won't be air rushing into the radiator, so the engine will get very hot indeed.

Imagine doing 120mph on the clock, then the stand toppling over, sending you 120mph into the garage wall....

And getting back to the topic, i wouldn't knowe the top speed of the Cinq. Many owners seem to think that 120mph on the clock literally means 120mph on the tarmac, even worse is that they are driving a tiny-engined car to the brink of explosion!

Personally, most i ever got out the 'cinq was 91mph. The car seemed so unstable and weedy at that speed that i decided to slow down. Also, driving at a modest 60mph on the m/way also allows you to actually hear other people sitting right next to you.

Not that the Cinq wasn't refined....

I have to agree with the engine on the brink, small car 100+ is too fast and the brakes won't handle it etc.

On my Uno, yes, 3rd gear can take you way beyond 60mph if you want it to but will the engine like the extra stress, no.

well, my black one hit the rev limiter in 4th at an indicated 97mph - work it out for yourself, I can't be arsed today - and will run past 120 on (off?) the clock.

I have hit the rev limiter in 5th downhill in a standard cinq, I calculated the speed from wheel size etc AISTC it was 124mph, the next day the alternator seized solid

well mine is a tiny sx and hav a weedy littl excuse of an enjine and also has a dead man's weight in the back which could also be called a sub; and manages to pull around 110mph, with the wind behind me, and my head out the window blowing myself along, and not quite going down hill.[8D]

Nearest we got to accurate checking was using the age-old milemarkers on the motorway. If you need to check your speedo you can do it this way:
Drive at a CONSTANT indicated 60mph (I know, it's embarassing, so do it at night) and count the red and white posts at the side of the road. There are 16 every mile. If you start your stopwatch/phone as you pass the first one, and stop it as you pass the 17th one (meaning you have passed 16) in theory if your speedo is accurate you should see a time of exactly 1 minute. Therfore, if it takes you say 66 seconds, then your speedo is 10% out, and you're doing 54mph.

It gets more interesting as you increase speed - say 16 posts take 45 seconds - you're doing 80mph, if it takes 40secs - 90mph, 30 secs - 120mph etc.

For example a standard Sporting running 13" wheels and 165x55/13 Yokohamas was reading more than 10% under, and so we had to drive it at an indicated 80mph to do an accurate 70mph. Putting 14" wheels and 195x40/14 tyres cancelled out much of the error.

I made up a basic small spreadsheet so I could input wheel diameter, tyre size, aspect ratio etc and work out revs per mile for various wheel/tyre options in order to see how far out various combinations were. It works reasonably well for what it is.

i work for ford, my last car was a focus, there's a trick with the speedo that makes the digital milometer act as a digital speedo instead, the digital one is very acurate.

i switched the display into speedo mode, and did 100mph down the M1, the needle showed around 92 mph. Even at 40mph on the digital, the needle was reading about 3 - 4 mph under (37mph).

Fact is that needle speedo's are unreliable, thats why if you get caught speeding, you can argue the toss if your upto 10% over the speed limit, e.g. 33 in a 30, 44 in a 40, 55 in a 50 etc...
