Hows that work then?

Got a beauty of an example over the road from my new house. New style in deep blue. Does it had a standard auto box or is it one of them paddle shift things?

P.S. I think I need to flyer him and the punto next door. :D

That's 7 selectable gears, but in normal operation there are virtually an infinite number of gears. We loved our Punto auto.

They are just like the selecta but with more advanced software control and better hydraulics. There are no defined ratios, except when in manual mode when it locks the box into predefined ratios. The gearbox in the 5 door has 6 gears and the Sporting 7 gears, but the only difference is the software giving more "software defined" gears. It still has has the L gear as well

The gearbox is designed to keep the engine at the max power revs while changing ratio's but it doesn't go through any gears. In economy mode it reduces the rev's to reduce fuel comsumption.

It is a more advance version of the Daf system designed by Van Doorn.

I meant the principal was the same as the old Daf versions but they did use a centrifugal clutch made up of about 8 plates within a drum (I rebuilt one and changed the belts). The Selecta is a different design because it uses a single belt and a normal differential, the manual gears are just software locking the cones at certain ratios. It was a marketing ploy to make them look like normal auto gearboxes. The old Punto selecta is basically the same design and operation but uses a ECU and better hydraulics to control it, ie to stop engine braking unless you press the brake pedal hard in which case it does use engine brake. They are far more reliable as well becuase they have designed out many of the early faults which were caused by vacuum pipes etc.

My mother has had loads of these type of gearboxes, starting with several DAF's, Volvo 340, Fiat Uno x 2, Fiat Punto. In the DAF when a belt snapped it was like a bomb going off, but they had no differential so it scrubbed the tyres when you made sharp turns and also put the transmission under a lot of strain.

Don't remember anyone posting about problems with selespeed either! ;) & before you mention Stu that was the actuator not the gearbox itself! :p
