Hi all. I have an issue with the speedometer on my 02 registered Punto Sporting. The needle rests below zero when stationary and when you start driving it only gets to zero when you are travelling about 10 mph (approx). This gives me an uneasy feeling about my speeds when in 20 & 30 mph zones! Also, when reversing it goes backwards (which i do not know if this is normal or not!!). Really in the need of some help and a lot of advice....

Open the dash up (not hard to do but don't rush any of the clips) and rotate the needle until it's resting position is just slightly below the zero line. Looks like it messed itself up somehow.

However you saying it goes backwards when you reverse now makes the problem a little more serious because it might be sensor/computer related

Vitally.... abs or non abs punto?

Try making the ecu's reset by taking battery off for 10mins
Ita free and if it works - wahey!

But weird thing is... the needle shoulsnt go backwards but forwards when reversing to indicate reversing speed....

Id be curiosu to see what live data shows when its reversing vs going forward

Thanks for all the ideas. I havent started anything just yet, but will keep yas posted.

As and to the question of the ABS....yes i believe it is. So what does this mean?

Non abs have a speed sensor on the gearbox which is done via the engine ecu to the speedo via canbus

Abs puntos are average of the 4 wheels speed and done via the abs ecu transmitted via the canbus system to dash

U need to see what the abs unit is seeing to get a clue whats happening
