Hey guys,

So for some reason my speedo gets stuck sometimes. If I give the dashboard a good tap it'll Spring back to life as well as if I get to past 20 it'll pop back to where it's supposed to be.

It's a tad a strange on why it's getting stuck. I wouldn't really care but I'm taking my test in my car soon so suppose I need it fixed. Or do you think I'd be alright?

Any ideas on why it's getting stuck and how to fix it or how much it'll cost to get someone to do it?

Thanks, Brandon.

OK, so its a mechanical one, not electronic. Do you have wet shafts?

Check gearbox oil level before driving anywhere.

Is that the same to normal oil or is it somewhere else?

Sorry, first car so I'm not too confident with mechanics

Nope. Gearbox has its own special gear oil. There is a plug in the front face of the box. Undo and stick pinky in. Oil should be up to the bottom of the hole.

Do your inner driveshaft boots turn with the driveshafts or are they bolted to the side of the box with bearings on the outer end that the shafts run in?

I'll take a look at the oil and get back to you.

With the driveshaft I have no idea where I'd begin to find out that information.

Thank you for the help by the way, I appreciate it!

Is this under the bonnet or elsewhere? Sorry I probably sound really dumb

Turn your steering wheel as far as it will go to the left. Get out and look at the left front wheel. Running between the wheel hub (where the brake disc/calpers/shock absobers are attached) and the gearbox (the big metal lump attached to the side of the engine) you will see a thick metal shaft with a vaguely cone shaped flexible rubber "boot" on the end where it goes into the gearbox. This is the driveshaft, the fexible rubber thing being the boot referred to by rallycinq.

Hope this helps,
Dan.

Not off a Sei, but you get the idea.

Number 6 is what you're looking at.

Hope this clears things up a bit.

The guys are right, or:

Open bonnet,
Peer at engine,
On one end of the engine is a gear box,
Running from the back of the gearbox (bit nearest seats) two shafts, one each side, going to wheels.
Thems the driveshafts, boots protect the inner (and outer) ends. Are they fixed to the shaft at each end or are the inner ends fixed to the gearbox.

Thanks everyone :)

Had my dad have a look and explained what you all said and it seems as if sorted.

Much appreciated guys! Once again this community has helped me fix my car!

What have you actually sorted?

Cheers

Nothing anymore, I explained and shown my dad what you all said and he did some work and the speedo seemed to have stopped sticking.

But now it's still doing it, less frequently but still sticking all the same.

Not overly sure what to do, I finish work at one so I'll post an image under my bonnet if it's helpful

It worries me that you may have a gearbox oil leak and that continuing to drive is causing more terminal harm.
