General speedo sensor wanted

The speedo sensor is faulty on my 1997 Mark 1 and I tried fiat agents but they all say that the part (no 71748478) is no longer available. Any ideas of where to get one. The MOT is due soon and a faulty speedo will result in a failure which is shame because the car is to good to scrap.

Failing that, a scrappy or a cheap GPS speedo.

I had to swap my speed sensor from the gearbox to the Mk2 gearbox. However, a Mk2 gearbox sensor will fit Mk1 gearbox but you need to wired up correctly. The Mk1 sensor comes with the loom and you connect to the engine loom. While the Mk2 sensor has just a connector, so I assume the engine loom connects to it drirectly. Hope you got what I am sayng. You should be able to get a mk1 or mk2 second hand from ebay quite easily.

i wouldn't expect speedo not working to fail an MOT, it perhaps should do but the car never goes fast enough for them to notice its not working during an MOT. I'd not worry about it, my mums old mk1 didn't have a speedo for about last 4 or 5 years she owned it, never even an advisory on the MOT.

Although i can see the desire to fix it obviously.
