depends if its cable or electrical, if its cable then the cable could have snapped and simply need replacing
not sure what your car will have though
Nope it is an electrical driven speedo.
Take the instrument cluster off using the guide here and invstigate, perhaps a wire is loose or damaged

if its electrical it could also be the sender unit in the gearbox right?
Yup, or some of the wiring between the sender anf gauge.

You are looking at the sensor in the gearbox, the wiring, or the cluster.
Does the odometer still work if you drive about?
Is the PAS light on? It takes an input from the VSS so would trigger the PAS warning light I'd have thought, or at least the steering would feel very odd at different speeds as it wouldn't adjust the assistance.

You can rule out anything in the cabin then pretty much. Check the senosr at the rear of the gearbox (you can get to it from the top of the bay).
Try another sensor and fix broken wiring. There is an earth line, a supply line (you can test both with a meter) and a signal line....think thats it.
Don't worry about the PAS light being off, the PAS ECU must be dumb, but your symptoms describe its not sensing the speed either.
