General Speed of Pandas

One of my 4x4 Pandas reached at least 100mph, so there...:nerner:

However; it reached zero the instant it met the bottom of the quarry !

You mention a Lancia engine and keyfob, maybe just maybe someone dumped a Y10 lump in there which would still be the same engine btw, and put the ignition barrel in too? Maybe they changed the speedo and it actually did 125............ kph! Never mind, no one still believes it!

If I can pitch in as somebody with one o these doorstops in my garage. The standard Turbo would hit 112 but that with better aerodynamics. NO chance my son :nono:

The only way i can think that a panda would get close to 125mph

Has anyone seen that Clarkson video where he fires a Nissan Cherry out of a trebuchet? That might do it.

I don't think there's any way my Panda would do 3 figures, and I don't intend trying it. It cruises happily at 70, and that's fast enough for me. I have other toys for going fast in ;)

Cheers,

Plug

Maybe you had ultra low profile tyres that were distorting the accuracy of the speedo??

BTW all car speedos under-read. This is part of the reason you will notice a discrepancy between the speedo reading and a gps unit. If your speedo says you're doing 60mph, you're more likely doing 56mph.

I think a speedo indicated 55mph in the four speed 903cc is as fast as I need to go, beyond that the noise is unbearable and you're looking for another gear that isn't there.

Anybody tried one of those noise cancelling radios in a Panda, man that could be good! Only problem is the radio is likely three times the value of the car (n)

Now we all know it's quite possible to get the average 1108cc carb panda up to warp speed!

I see Jim's Panda has crossed the event horizon (c) Stephen Hawkins Prof.

It will no doubt do it again in a few months time when it crosses the event horizon known as the Mexican border :p

Bearing in mind it was a Selecta, what is the highest gear ratio that gearbox can achieve?
I think it's the same set of ratios as the standard 5 forward speed 1000s sort of thing. it does say it's infinitly variable though ... so maybe you can get it to go up to 1/5000 revolutions....

no-one knows!!! what sort of trouble maker are you!!???..... it's questions like that, that get people like Stephen hawkins band from pub quizzes.

yes..... i think we should impound this panda and strip the gearbox, looking for evidence of pixie dust...

Thanks for all your answers.

However, I've come to the conclusion that you're all just jealous that my Panda was faster!!!!

It's probs not a good idea taking a Panda to that speed anyway. So, drive safe boys and girls!

PSML! :worship:

personally with the owners of classic pandas displayed on this forum, they respect their cars a lot more than maybe yourself did and this respect of the vehicle probably tells you what type of owners and characters they all are, so probably they wouldnt dream of going mach 1 in a panda

Thanks for the laugh though (y)

just been reading through this...... a one litre auto doing 125???

now that is a laugh :) maybe if it was a motorbike with an auto box I could believe it :)

ps why dont the smilies work for me?

i think the statement was more than a little tongue in cheek Steve...

my sisley has done 110 once and still gets up to 85-90 pretty easy but she drinks petrol at this speed,I have a brand new engine in my garage from an uno which I bought some time ago from a school.I know its not good to do these speeds in a sisley and my mates one which he bought off this site is more suited to this treatment as it lowered, piper cam,k+n,wide alloys, low profiles etc.I have a honda cbr 1000 which goes from 100-160+in seconds and that tends to give me that fix I need once in a blue moon so the poor sisley very rarely gets her engine working over time.

I got a 126 to do 72 mph down hill once:D but halfway down the webasto roof blew open as the catch couldn't hold it and scared the **** out of me. I thought the car had blown up the bang was so loud. :D

HAHA!

On the subject of performance and Pandas, I successfully trounced a newish Rover 216 on the way back from Altrincham. Didn't do over 70mph either (and in 70 zones I might add) but was much quicker and more confident than the little eeejit round corners and over roundabouts.

So it joins a Hyundai Amica and an old Mini in the loser stakes.

I looked at this thread hoping to find out what the CVT top ratio is. I read an article about the early Fiat Uno Selecta and it apparently has a wider range, and the extra flexibility is at the top end, so you effectively have a 6-speed gearbox.

My 1000S is; 1st=3.909:1 - 5th=0.831:1, so range=4.7.

The range of any CVT is: the longest-minus-shortest distance from belt to shaft centre, squared.

Square root of 4.7=2.16

So if the outside position of the belt is more than twice (>2.16x) as far from the shaft axis as the inside position, the Selecta transmission should have higher top 'gear' and lower bottom ratio.

Assuming this is true, the Selecta should be faster. If the Selecta in the Panda is similar or better than that in the older Uno, then the extra range probably out-ratios even a 5-speed gearbox both above and below.

Also, the FIRE engine has max torque at 2750rpm, and with the Selecta transmission, you can keep the engine constant around this low range whilst the CVT accelerates for you. Selecta CVT is the perfect match for the FIRE engine. My 1000S is already the best car ever, but a working Selecta would be my holy grail.
