Hi All

My 52 reg 1.6 Active is showing an engine fault

It has stalled whilst in traffic a few times, but then starts up and runs ok. The local dealer reset the ECU and the engine fault line went off for one day! The remote fob is also dead now.

Any suggestions?

Find out if there are any fault codes recorded now. Dealer should have found out if there were any stored fault codes previously
Is your car battery in good condition?

I would have thought the key fob was a different problem but that could be internal fob batteries. Is it flashing when pressed?

Does the engine need the battery to keep running once it's been started??? I would have thought not but with all the electronics that the engine has got now a days i thought i'd better ask!!!!!!!

Thanks guys

The key fob never worked properly , only the unlock button worked. I've changed the battery and still no red light coming on.

I'll have to book it in again at Fiat dealership. problem started one week after end of warranty!

Sometimes you can take the fob apart and fix/replace a bad circuitboard button.

The key fob battery is just to work the lock/unlock/alarm circuits. It's not needed to start the car or keep it running

Deckchair, you're confusing me a bit.... in your previous post you asked "Is your car battery in good condition?" and now you are talking about the key fob battery?

I think Stilo Multijet 140bhp asked his question because you asked about the car battery...

If I can take a guess, I would say that the Stilo would most probably not be able to keep running without a battery as the alternator is not what supplies current to the electronics, the battery does. The alternator only charges the battery. If the battery is gone, the electronics won't work, adn because everything in electronic, I think the car will stop running.

Anybody care to test this theory? :chin:

I was indeed refering to the car battery, obviously don't need the key fob battery for car to work!!!!!! So deos anybody know if the car needs the battery to keep running???

Jesus! Yes. Don't ever run a car without a battery connected. Couldn't believe that's what you were asking as you said your remote key fob was dead. Alternator needs a reference battery fed voltage so it knows what to do and the battery is the smoother in the circuit among many other reasons why it's armageddon for the car's electrics

The key fob worked ( one button only ) a few times today. It looks like a loose connection in the key fob. Probably need a new key . have been quoted £ 65 for a key , and £ 65 to code it ! Has anyone got one done cheaper ?

Engines running alright now , but the engine fault light is still on

If it's the push button on the circuit board gone then, if you're good or you know someone who's skilled with electronics, then you might be able to obtain a replacement circuit board push button for around 10p from an electronics shop and then solder it in. Might even get away with not needing to recode it

Not for the faint hearted though:)

Engine fault light though means you still have a problem. Find out if you have a recorded fault code
